Having problems getting my 225 V6 to idle. The engine starts right up and will keep running and the timing is set. I have to keep the idle cranked up or the engine will die. The carb was just rebuilt and the fuel pump and filter are brand new.

Here at work there are some guys that race and build stock cars. They are telling me that it is my points, and that I should just spring for the HEI.

I also noticed that there is a light ticking sound coming from the distributor(I hope that is where it is coming from).

    Any suggestions?

Also, I wanted to say that this is the best resource around for Jeep related help. I recently sold some items on this sight to a fellow Jeeper that lives in the same town. Keep up the good work.

    Thanks

Did you set your idle (set screw on carb) after installing the carb? Might just be two low.

I'm thinking the idle mixture screws are cranked in too far, starving the engine at idle. Once you open the throttle plates you are running on the main circuits of the carb and not the idle circuits.

Try backing them out equally a couple of turns at first, then one turn at a time to see if the problem eases. Turn them left to open (more fuel) and right to go leaner. A vacuum gauge will help to get them right, otherwise once it idles normally you turn one at a time in until the engine sputters then back off 1/2 turn. Repeat on the other side.

U can also use a tachometer...enrichen (turn left) the idle mixture screws until you get max RPM. Then Lean roll (turn right) each screw about an 1/8 of a turn. This will get you close

I have adjusted the idle screw, and once it is backed out a little it dies. I will get a tachometer to see what RPM I have right now, but it sounds awful high. I have also adjusted the idle mixture screws, and have had no success. I will try your suggestion for adjusting these.

Can I eliminate the points as a problem?
