I was at Steve's cousin Lees house and picked up this windshield.

    It's off a 71 I think.
CJ6 original yellow paint. With hardtop.
This is the first time I have seen a padded dash, cooked to a crisp vinyl.
If I remember this one was pretty well optioned. Is this a Tux only item?

Not sure about '71, but by '72 the padded dash was on the regular option list. Certainly not a Tux-only item. The brackets (not catches) are indicative of a factory hard top.

The windshield itself is a desirable thing if not rusty. There is always a demand for the hard top filler strips - you would not want to separate the filler strips from the top if it were usable. The mirror is desirable because it works with the intermediate windshield and does not glue to the glass. The sun visors are desirable if they are in good shape.

The tall windshield glass (68+) would not have appeared on a Tux (produced until 67).

The only early CJ I've seen with that dash pad was a 71 Ren II
    Looks like a good score!

My '71 came with a factory dash pad. I removed it when I installed my full cage back in the early 90's... Still have it in my shop.

There were two types of dash pad. This is the one with a stitched cover. AFAIK it was unchanged from when it was introduced for the Renegade(?) through '73-74. My '73 CJ-5 (in '73) came with the stitched pad. In '74-75 the molded pad (no stitched cover) was introduced. Both of my '75s came with this pad. In '76, the shape of the pad changed completely, so the intermediate molded pad had a short run of a year or two.

Even if the pad were not on the regular option list before 1972, it could have easily been ordered through the Jeep parts network and installed by the dealer or customer any time after its introduction with the Renegade(?). My book shows a 989835 pad which I presume is this stitched pad, held by 5 screws. This PN is consistent with a 1970-ish Kaiser origin. It also shows a 5456408 held by 3 screws, which should be the molded pad. Again, this PN is consistent with a 1974-ish AMC origin.

Interestingly, there was a 989838 pad which is meant for the ventilating windshield (!) and a tan Levis 5456413 pad for 1975, which should be the molded type. All the others are black, AFAIK. I have never seen a dash pad in beige vinyl (the alternative upholstery color in the intermediate era).

I am restoring my 1971 Rll and would love to have the dash pad and visors. Are they for sale?

I will list some of the parts for sale in the classifieds.
Montanacj, I was planning on keeping the sun visors, I have a set on my Jeep so I might sell them.
aalison, If it is just the vinyl an upholstery shop should be able to recover it.
