    hi everyone

rebuilding a 1967 CJ5 from the ground up. vehicle has already been modified extensively, ie ancient 1.6L toyota engine, axles, brakes & steering so i'm afraid i can only work w/what's there.

body is off for full restoration. engine swap is 480 lb Toyota 1JZ-G non-turbo six-in-line 2.5L, about 200 bhp w/ auto box & ECU. at the engine mock up stage now, getting the engine mounts sorted. once the mounts are in place we'll pull the engine to restore the chassis. mid-level chassis & body corrosion but nothing too serious. straight-through exhaust will terminate in front of the rear tyre, passenger side. Right hand drive - resident in Thailand.

this project is rear wheel drive. Independent front suspension & steering geometry are probably going to be from a Toyota Hi-Lux pickup, same for prop shaft. IRS to be determined. 33" or 35" tyres, as little lift as possible to accomodate tyres, don't want to raise the COG too much, power steering, discs all round, roll cage tied to frame, Bikini top only, spare mounted on tailgate, lockbox welded between seats, ECU mounted in dash.

i drove a similar vehicle a while ago. it had plenty of power, the 1JZ is a very smooth engine, pulled nicely & felt reasonably stable, that one had double wishbone IFS & rear leaf springs but didn't have the opportunity to open it up so don't know what kind of top speed it could achieve,,,

questions for the car we're building bearing in mind this is going to be a road car, not built for off-road:

    1. what kind of top speed would you limit a vehicle of this kind with a reasonable margin of safety?

    2. appreciate members' input on IRS & IRS design, types of shocks for onroad use, ability to hit 'traffic pacifiers/sleeping policemen' at say 40 mph without making too much fuss, decent cornering ability, as much stability as possible & a comfortable highway ride.

    3. for CJ5 owners out there would you please comment on the handling characteristics of your machines at speed?

    4. Tints of Army Green at paint stage.

next project will be 4WD offroad vehicle & using this as a learning experience before getting out of depth.

thanks to everyone, much appreciate your comments.

Interesting ,Toyotas are good little engines and I could see one being used as a jeep pusher ;). Im no help to you but I have a question for you why build a street jeep? They make such great off road transportation. There nothing wrong with it ,just that Im curious.

You're joking right?,,,,.......I don't believe a 2wd, rice burning, independent suspension POS with a jeep body is going to handle like any "early CJ" from this site.

    Good luck.

What JB said is true but I might have been more diplomatic.

I'm not sure how you expect us to know how an independent suspension vehicle would handle when we all have live axles and leaf springs. :?

Hi Tony - welcome to the site.

I think folks might be missing that you're in Tailand...that might help explain some of the Jeep's setup and availability of componentry.

I have no input whatsoever...;) Other than the body it's entirely different from anything I've been around.

I was guessing overseas by the Toyota parts and the mention of a Hi-Lux. ;)

Pictures would be interesting! What does the motor come out of? I've never heard of a 1JZ-G. Sounds like an interesting conversion, but like others have said its nothing like what we have over here. If you kept it low enough and made a wide stance I think it would corner great. However our jeeps weren't really made to turn corners fast, unless you want to do that crawling over boulders. Of course they still tend to roll over sometimes. ;)

    Good luck,
    Kevo

thanks one & all for your comments, all of which are welcome. yes, resident in Thailand which compromises many choices.

vehicles never die here, they're rebuilt, cut, chopped, sliced & re-rebuilt in many ways. import duties can run to 250% on performance cars & parts, more usually 150% making scavenging the way to go for an old Jeep. this with low low labor charges makes rebuilds interesting. mechanics are inventive, knocking up mounts, adapting parts from other cars easily.

used Toyota/Honda/Nissan engines & parts are easy & cheap here, imported from Japan where 100s of thousands of vehicles are auctioned, chopped up & exported all over in containers, emission laws.

the 1JZ Jeep i drove was a lot of fun, the ECU makes it smooth, indestructible bottom end, not hard to turbocharge to 400-600bhp with no internal mods. later project.

a Jeep is ideal for this country. lots of unpaved tracks & back roads, never gets cold & an open cars are fun. & Jeeps look great. highways are mostly dual carriageway, some smooth some rough & you can cruise at 100+,, speeding fines taken care of on the spot, maybe $5-$10.

IFS/IRS will widen the stance by a few inches. the 33"/ maybe 35" wheels will need some lift, too early to say how much yet. as mb8265753 says the 1JZ-G is 200 bhp non-turbo but,, the 1JZ-GTE 2.5 liter 280 bhp stock is fitted to the Supra & comes with twin CT12 turbos. a friend has an Opel Omega with the GTE installed. he replaced the twin turbos with a huge IHI truck turbo, about 385bhp, lots of fun. the 1JZ comes from Japanese domestic market Cressidas, Chasers & the like. the 2JZ-GTE is the 3 liter donk in the Soarer.

    >why build a street Jeep

more fun per buck than anything else i can see. & a 2wd Jeep will get you places most cars can't go. i like open cars & Thailand never gets cold. easy to modify without breaking the bank.

    >You're joking right?,,,,......

No Sir, no jokee but thanks for the valuable input. i'll try my best to disguise it from looking too much like a POS. how about commie Chinese Air Force camouflage? what do you think? original frame is still there, came with a 25 yr old underpowered rice burner so it has to go. hard braking caused the machine to skid into oncoming traffic alarming the lady drivers & took about half a steering wheel turn to make a small change in direction. Jeep parts are a bugger to find here. other than that it's a terrific vehicle. the original Jeep front axle, hubs & steering box are yours for the asking. :) i'll throw in the horrible old rice burner, you can use it as a doorstop :) try some lateral thinking 181, might make you less grumpy. :) gotta say despite decades of wear & neglect the steering tracked straight & true, no vibration at speed even with the twist in the frame from battle damage, about 50mph, floats a lot.
