72 Grille Body Mount

This is the hole going through the front frame cross member. My intent is to cut out the whole middle section, patch, and redrill the hole to the size it should be to accept the body mount bolt and bushing. So, I have never seen the correct way that this attaches, the PO had a jury rigged rubber block that was attached to the frame member by those two carriage bolts shown in the picture, and the grille rested on the block. The hole on the bottom of the grille to receive the bolt is just a little larger than the bolt itself. Is it safe to assume that the hole through this crossmember will be just a little larger to allow for a bushing running through the rubber mounts? Also, neither the service manual nor the parts manual specifically show the stack around the frame. I am thinking that it should be (from the bottom), bolt, flat washer, rubber mount, bushing, rubber mount, flat washer, then bolt into the grille receiver nut. Correct? Thanks

This thread has been moved from Early CJ to here. Lack of attention to detail. Thanks TIMGR for the catch. He had mentioned it might be a 76 and up grille since because of my description on the mounting of the Grille bolt coming up through the bottom. I was under the impression that the 72-75 Grilles had the 3 screw directional lights. Either way, I have ordered the 76 and up kit online. I am assuming if I just put in a patch with the hole approximately the diameter of the bolt, I should be on the right track. Is this true, or is there something there I don't know about. Thanks

I have my 72 apart at this time. I can take a picture of what it looks like and post it when I get home. The hole in the crossmember is quite a bit bigger than the bolt. I believe the bolt is about 1/2", the hole is approximately 1". I'll measure it this evening.

Thanks for your help. Even just the size guesstimate gives me a clue.

I got busy yesterday evening and forgot. I will try my best to make it happen today

I can't get photobucket to open. So I don't have pics. But the hole in the crossmember is exactly 1" in diameter. My grille had a bolt coming up from the bottom with a big fender washer on each side of the crossmember, then the rubber bushing, another fender washer, then the grille.

Thanks DHILL, exactly what I needed to know, I just received my "kit" yesterday and saw how it should be. With your hole dimensions, at least I know it will be right. Thanks again.
