Who has 3.73s with V-6?

I think my '68 has the best combo in that it has 4.88s and OD. The '78 and '79 both have 3.73s, one's a V8 and the other a 258 ci six. The '68 is great in the trail in that it goes over rocks and things slooowly. The other two are to fast, thereby losing some control. Also, they need to go into second gear to make it back home in the mountains from the desert as the ratio just sucks going onroad on a hill. Hope to get 4.88s for them both. My .02 cents also.

I had 3.73's in my 67 v6 and i hated it. i run 31" tires and I was always clutching on trails. not even rock crawling just small narrow trails bird hunting or whatever. I guess if you want to cruise at 35 mph or better without stopping often, then it would be wise, i bet you would love it. The only time my jeep sees pavement is for gas. If you want I have a rear one for sale (cheap) but the front is mashed.

Methinks it's going to be a little on the anemic side with those 35's. The auto tranny will help a little though...

Well ive got the twin stick 18...

Would it hurt it to put it in 2lo, and shift to 2hi on the fly, for starts?

I KNOW ill need lower gears later on, but dont ahve funds for it now, and its a dd and show thing anyhow.

also be careful about 2wd low range. a lot of torque to just 2 wheels esp with a v6.

my 71 has 3.73's with the v-6, when i ran 31's it wasn't too bad but after lifting and 33's third gear was almost non-existant. i am currently swapping to 4.56 gears.

with 3.73's wont be much torque goin to em in 2lo..... lol just imagine I swapped 3.33's out... what fi I would have left those.....lol

So I oughta go with 4.56's atleast? for MOSTLY street use?

    mb82 I feel great!

35s mean 4.10 or 4.27 gears IMO 4.56 is the number given for a 4 cyl motor

My '67 has 3.73's and does fine until you go up a steep grade on highways in the mountains. My '05 Wrangler with the 4.0 L I-6 and 3.73's does exactly the same thing (in fact the automatic overdrive is useless). Both Jeeps have 31" or so tall tires. Offroad and around town both are fine. However, when either one experiences any differential problems, up I go. Lately, a local Jeeper went from 3.73's to 4.56's with 33's and still complains about not being able to pull the highway grade on a certain local mountain pass without downshifting and getting the RPMs up. For me they are fine until they need to be replaced for wear and tear.

If I upgrade.... which i probably wont, ill go with 4.56's.... the engine will hold the rpm just fine, never lost a 3.8 from running to hard, bone stock I ran them around 4500-5000 rpm at 55mph when I ahd 31's and a sami case. I lost mine from 1500rpm, and low oil pressure fromt he junk factory oil pump. I run 70psi at an idle now.
BUt if you say 4.10's would be about right for the v6, with 35's I probably will never upgrade, ive got a few mroe ponies, and a little more torgue so I should be fine on the road in southern ohio
