Windshield Install

Discussion in 'Early CJ5 and CJ6 Tech' started by gibson-d@sbcglobal.net, Oct 23, 2017.

  1. For those who have done it, split seal vs one piece seal. I tried with Omix split seal, it kept slipping off the glass. Called a mobile installer, he tried and quit. I can get a one piece seal from Amazon, would I have better luck?

I've only used the kind with the locking strip, is that what you consider the split seal? I don't know why a professional would have an issue with it. o_O

I used the full glass seal. (Locking strip must be in the seal when installing.) The hardest part was getting the seal on the glass. Installing the glass was easier. Install a string in the rubber on insert the glass in the frame. Using glass cleaner as lube helps.

A two piece lock strip seal is by far the easiest way to go. With a inexpensive lockstrip tool and a can of glass cleaner it is a really easy install. 10 minute install for any professional.

  6. Thanks for your input guys. Both me and the "pro" couldn't keep the seal on the glass. We'd put the seal on the glass and if it stayed on long enough to get it to the frame it would come lose. I got frustrated after many tries, called the pro who couldn't do any better. I was thinking that maybe a non split seal would have more tension and not slip off so easily. Any comments? I'll talk to some glass shops this week and bring it in to them.

I've always put the rubber on the frame first, whether it's a windshield or the hardtop windows and then work the glass into the rubber. Put locking strip in after glass is in. I can't picture doing it any other way.

There is the first mistake. The rubber goes onto the frame. The glass goes into the rubber. The lock strip goes in. Easy Peasy.

Sounds like the "pro" has only done modern windshields. ;)

  16. I got a phone call from the company that sent the installer yesterday. He said he was sending a more experienced tech, 2 guys came and put the seal in the frame and had the glass installed +/- an hour. I'm good to go with a DOT tinted windshield. Thank all for your input.

Glad you got it installed. :coffee::) I kinda feel bad for the tech that hadn't (apparently) been trained on the old school stuff.
