Was that an OHC 6 in that '65 Tempest? That was a great running engine, just that it couldn't compete with a 389!

No doubt a 426 Hemi would move the old jeep down the road but I am looking to simply get a little more out of the 134 to make it a little more fun to drive. It will never be a daily driver, in fact it only comes out on sunny warm days. I don't have a interest in spending a ton of time or money (been there done that) so I am really looking at bolt on and around 1K. that fact makes the OD look like the best option.

Proof I have been there done that (body work in progress)

I would agree.........The OD is a good mechanical change in ratios that should help it climb better.............on the motor , not much upside trying to hop-up and old platform when your only starting with maybe 60 Horsepower adjusted! .......without first dumping in a bunch of $$$$$$.....

Just the regular 6, which of course combined with the 2 speed auto made for an anemic ride. Of course the 389 didn't care if it had the 2 speed.

The OHC was introduced in '66.

Wasn't the 6 cylinder tempest the one that used a transaxle instead of a tranny and differential?

'61-'63 used a front engine/rear transaxle in the Tempest. Nearly perfect 50/50 weight distribution and independent suspension at all four corners, these early cars were way ahead of their time. The first two years could have a slant 4 or 215 alloy V8, and I think '63 only got the optional 326 V8, all with a rear transaxle. After that the Tempest/Lemans became an A-Body along with the Chevelle.
