After being unable to work on my Jeep for over a year I have only 3 weeks to get it all back together before I loose access to the garage I am using.....

I have a Dana 18 TCase and like most it leaks... a lot! Is it best to use a seal kit or lots of RTV?

Other....use some Permatex Aviation goop (brown molasses type stuff). Get the case and covers good and clean, make sure covers aren't warped from overtightened bolts. Clean everything with brake cleaner. Use Permatex sealer on both sides of gasket.

For the shim pack I did this...[IMG]

Basically, a solid aluminum (or brass) piece the correct thickness needed for my shim pack. I cut grooves around the bearing and oil passage holes to help seal it up. I used some brush-on copper gasket sealer on this part.

Nearly 500 miles, and no signs of leaking yet. :)

Except for my rear main seal...which I didn't do myself. :(
    That's my upcoming project. ;)

Not necessarily, the dana 18 is like a detroit diesel, you only have to worry about it if it totally stops leaking.:D

Just filled up our tranny after a clutch job and after going around the block gear oil started leaking out the back area of the transfercase. Can gear oil leak out of the transmission through the transfercase???

The transmission and transfercase do not have a seal between them so they share oil back and forth when going up and down hills.

RTV will work, however, there is a glop called "right stuff" is is much faster as you can smeer it on there and tighten it up. RTV requires a little more patience.
Gaskets even home-cut ones will work nicely with that spray sealer if the surfaces are actually flat.

Well, I used Permatex #2 non-hardening RTV on my bottom pan and it is leaking - AAAAAAAAAARGH ! Looks like I'll either make a gasket, or buy one - -
I'll be using both RTV AND a gasket this time....
