I got my 1979 EF 231 V6 installed and I noticed that there is no fuel pump. I was expecting the mechanical pump that was on the 225, and there is no spot for one.
So i need to get a electric fuel pump.

What pump should I buy? Brands? Is there flow rates and pressures that I need to consider?

high volume low pressure for a carb. most flaps should have something. be sure to also get a pressure regulator. mount the pump at the tank, mount a filter with return just before the carb and the regulator between the filter and carb and you should be set to go. Saw an ad for an edelbrock, made for carbs, had an internal adjustable pressure regulator, but it was a little salty at $100 plus.

Does the pump need to be mounted at the tank?
I was thinking in the engine comartment on the inner fender or firewall.

    Thanks for the input.

Electric pumps are pushers not pullers like the factory mechanical. much more efficient when mounted close to the tank.

I don't recall the brand, but you can get pumps that push or pull. In a CJ5 I'm not sure you could find a place that didn't work - just that that much room between tank and motor. I had mine on the underside of the body right under the drivers seat.

Now when I wire it in.......I wire though the ignition. Are there any other safety concerns I should look at?

SSDutch also has the pump tied into the oil pressure. No pressure assumes engine isn't running and cuts the pump.

Dutch had a manual switch on the dash..after my rollover I actually had the presence of mind to reach over and kill it.

Oil pressure- did you use a standard oil pressure sending unit for an idiot light.......could you expand on that?

MY PO had wired mine strait with a toggle switch with a fast flip cover on it  , If I had to run it again I would run it though the ign switch , then threw the toggle . That way I can still Cut it off if I roll and some how broke the key off in the ign. Plus you can use it for the "hey baby it looks like it wont start" trick ;)

not sure of the brand i am using. wired the pump from ignition to "safety" switch to pump. used a mr. gasket brand regulator (was $18 @ flaps). unsure of 231's fuel pressure requirement, but the 225 uses 2.5 psi.

Purolator $28. There's two though - different psi and cfm combinations. If I recall the 2G carb wants the lower psi.

Nope. But a regulator wouldn't hurt at all. I just got a used Auto Pro Fuel guage to monitor my psi, I had no intention of running such guage but I got it real cheap so its going in. From memory I think I'm currently running 12-15psi.
I wouldn't mount the pump actually where I did. I plan on attatching it to the body instead of the frame.
