I am parting out my CJ as I have my first child on the way and will not have any money for this project in the foreseeable future. I vow to one day own a restored CJ5! I will not be denied!

I want to offer them on this forum first before ebay in respect to all the help/suggestions I have received in the past. I have a buddy thinking about making a trip back to northern Indiana from Denver via I-80 & he might be interested in helping with delivery along the way if he gets his gas money paid for. Anyways, I need to know what to ask before I put it on "for sale", due to requirements of price being included.

    Anyways, all from a 63:

-tub - spent life in dry western air. Of course, the floor was rusted under the tank and under the tool box, so I already started on cutting some of that out. The body mounts need repair as well. Other than the small bit of rust where the wood support for the old spare tire mount is, the body is incredible shape. The PO put some sort of "rhino lining" on it that has remarkably preserved the body. The lining is flaking off to reveal a body in great shape. Probably about as nice an unrestored, original body as you'll find.

-hood & fenders - had "rhino lining" underneath, surface rust only

-winshield with glass - in good shape, other than one "bb type" wound. surface rust only

grill from later model intermediate cj that will accomodate a V6.

-frame - had rhino lining on it as well, straight and no known damage (can't see the whole thing to look for cracks because of "rhino linging"

dana 25 complete wheel mount to wheel mount. A few of the studs were twisted off.

Well, just confirmed my buddy will drop off along I-80 in two weeks when he makes that trip. He'll do the small parts for gas - dont know about the tub, I'll check.

    Thanks.

    Keep the Jeep.

In my experience kids don't cost that much for quite some time..(unless you have to cover the birthing...or have some unforseen expenses).

Clothes..toys..supplies...just all kind of "showed up" for us - the point of overload.

When we outgrew stuff we passed it on to other new parents - there's a whole hidden network of baby stuff supply and demand that doesn't involve payment -- you'll be amazed.

Boyink is right kids don't cost much except for birthing bills for about 6-7 years, mine are in middle school and high school, did I mention blood sucking leaches. Limp along with the project, friends and family will help a whole sh#$load with the babies needs. And since I have a little experience here, don't let your wife and her friends go all gaga over the cutsie crap to make a nursery, cause when you have your 2nd child or if not you will realize in 5 years what a butt load of wasted money was spent on a kid that was uselessly spent and the child is not better or worse for it and doesn't remember it at all, a little kid that crawls would be better off playing with a room full of cardboard boxes there imagination and loving parents!
Keep the jeep, you'll regret it, besides its good for your sanity when you and/or the baby can't sleep to go tinker for an hour or 2!!

I certainly do appreciate the encouragement, but there are more factors than cost involved (we do have to pay for the delivery tho). Money was an issue even without the kid, as I'm not the richest guy in the world.

Since I have the soapbox, I'll tell you all to vote yes for any firefighter funding increases next time it comes around. No one wants to pay for it, until they're upside down in a ditch or watching their house burn down. Sorry about the rant, just support your troops and your homeland defense.

The wife needs the garage for her car and the two feet of snow we just got out here reinforces that - I really can't argue with her on that one.

I'm just not at a point where I can afford to do this, timewise or moneywise.

Thanks for the words of wisdom & yes we have been overloaded with baby crap and fortunately the wife was reasonable about the baby room.

Agree with all the above. If you have room, keep it. It'll cost $0 to let it wait for you. If it's revenue enhancement, PM me a figure you need for the fenders only. I'll be out of town 'til the 28th but I'd love to have 'em if they're decent. I've been at my project for 3+ years, sometimes you make progress, other times it's static for months. Whatever you do, make the decision that's right for you.

What engine - 231? Running? Tranny and t-case condition? Brakes work? Is the Jeep still assembled and driveable (even just around the yard)?

This will dramatically increase the sale price, if the potential buyer can hear it run or take it for a short test drive to assess the clutch, brakes, axles, etc.

Give us a little more info and we'll try to come up with a fair price (ballpark, of course).

Man I'd love that tub.... I'm even gonna be in Colorado this summer... no way to really transport, though, grr.

Oh well, just gonna wait until I'm stationed somewhere in the south, should be able to find something then.

Exactly why I love this site...the encouragement is awesome. However, I must get rid of it or I may be sleeping in the tub beside the house & it's still pretty cold in Colorado.

That's funny. I'll be in Grand Rapids this summer (inlaws), but have no way to transport it. I may have an option for you if you're really interested. My buddy is going back Argos, IN to set up our tree stands for the coming season (about three 2 1/2 - 3 hours due south of you). He may haul it back if you pay his gas.

If you're really intersted, PM me and we'll see what we can work out. I don't know what it's worth, though.

Anyone that is serving our country gets a little extra effort from me...

I was in the same position when my first son was born, but I had already watched my 79 Chevy 4x4 and my inherited El Dorado get sold. I disassembled the Jeep and put most of it in a storage room in the basement. The only thing in the garage was the frame and the tub, and they only took up 2 feet of floorspace sitting on end. Now here it is 10 years later, and I have no wife, (but I kept the kids) and it is going back together. I know I made the right decision, and you must do what is right for you.

from someone that has had a recent child in the last couple years(actually 3) and who is just as new at marriage as he is at fatherhood. i can understand to a point why you must get rid of the ol girl. but i will tell you this, if it wasnt for my jeep and some really good buddies i would have had several nervouse break downs at several points in both the newborn and new marriage process. money was tight for a little while since being in the navy doesnt pay all that much, but after being in awhile and money getting better on the paycheck end im glad i stuck it out in the long run. either way good luck to you and your family (and of course the jeep) and if this one isnt the one, than that just means you need to start looking asap for the next one!

I sold my '73 back about 12 years ago because I was traveling in my job and lived on the road for about 10 years. I looked for over a year before I found my '66....I was looking for another intermediate with a 304....Sell it if you must, but it might take a long time to get back into it and old jeeps are getting harder to find now.

I can relate. I have two tax deductions of my own. I was afraid that I would have to give up alot when my first born, but.......I have a very understanding wife. That's her, 8 months pregnant, with a family friend and my "new" Jeep after an hour drive to pick it up in a single cab, manuel tranny pick-up truck. Goes to show that anything is possible.....so don't give up hope!!!!! ;)

If it was me, I would keep the jeep. Ya might not be able to do anything with it for awhile, but you don't owe money on it. Plus the amount of $ you could raise selling it in parts really won't go that far anyway.

    Everyone needs a hobby.

I have a 2-1/2 yr. old (see avatar) and I also have elected to sell my JEEP (see sig). Money has always been an issue with my JEEP. More importantly was the time. I couldn't justify spending time & $ on my fav hobby and not spending it on my A#1 most favorite little person in the world. So, the JEEP is sold.

One day when the whole family can enjoy my passion for these old buggers. I will again own an early.

    YMMV. Good Luck!!

I say if at alllllllll possible keep the Jeep.

Its paid for and doesn't eat.
When my 1st born (now 3) was almost here I sold a 2 seat sand rail for next to nothing. Been kicking myself ever since.
My wife is very understanding and has even allowed me another sand rail this time a 4 seater. Of course it has to sit till the 5 is done.
My son loves to hang out in the shop with me when I work on the Jeep.
Cant replace that feeling with anything. :D

I have 2 little girls and I manage to spend alot of time with them, My oldest (6 years) thinks she is part of a pit crew when shes out in the garage with me. She seems to really enjoy it( I do to) and my youngest (almost 4) is getting pretty involved in the jeep as well. I have had to kick them both out a couple times for welding and such, but they come right back after I am done. My jeep has become a great way to spend time with the girls and still enjoy what I like to do. Shoot, I may actually be teaching them a little self reliance in the process. Make your own bed, but remember whatever your decision is, you are gonna have to sleep in it for a long time. Oh by the way, I brought my Jeep home and kicked my wifes 04 Nissan Exterra out of the garage just before the start of the rainy season here on the Oregon Coast, So i feel your pain, but she got over it.
