Hi, This is a dumb question but is anyone running 33's on there stock cj5 1970? I have a set of 31's and they fit ok, and there is probably 3 in's of room in the front fender well. I went muddin on last saturday and had no problems in a 3foot deep pond. If so is there any rubbin on of cambered runs? :p

33x12.5's are gonna rub on stock suspension, the 31's are fine but that xtra width is gonna kill ya. What size rims are you runnin, you'll need at least 8" wide rims for the 12.5's to fit.

going to need a lot of the body butchered up to clear. a 2.5" lift would be better.

My Rims are 15x8 no offset! The only real reason I ask is because on my buddies '74 he has 33's and it works well.

He obviously hasn't been flexed alot, they should rub like heck on a stock sitting jeep, now if the trails you're riding are fairly mild, then thats fine, but I have actually rubbed my tires with a 2 1/2" lift and 31x10.5's on 8" rims, its hard, but I can do it with the stock bumpstops and no extensions like there suppose to have!

You might have room just sitting there, but find a way to cycle the suspension all the way from top to bottom.

Usually 31's are about all you can do on stock springs. I run 32's with a 1" lift, but do have a bit of rubbing at the front springs at full lock and inside wheelwells in the rear (doesn't really bother me).

The Amc Jeep seem to set a little higher, probably because they are newer. Everybody pretty much said it. I have seen that 12.50-31s(325/60-15) will rub on 71 and older but usually work ok on lter models. That size was created for stock or mildly lifted Jeeps.

my cousin runs 32x11.50's on his 1970 with no lift and minimal rubbing on the springs. he also has 8 inch wide rims. in my opinion they look to big with no lift but this may be an option if you want bigger tires.

If you really want to do this, at least add extended bumpstops to limit the upward travel so you don't tear up your sheet metal or rubber...

I am running 33x13.50 Super Swamper LTB on my CJ-5.

See the attached pics. The first pic (attached) is with stock springs. The second pic is with the following:
    1/2" body lift (hockey pucks)
    1/2" shackle lift (home-made)
    2-1/2" BDS Spring Lift

FYI... I could barely drive the jeep on the road with the 33's on the stock setup. It would rub like crazy even just going around corners.

I now have little rubbing on the inner rear wells and slightly on the upper front fenders while flexing. (see pic #3)

My '70 is running 33's now with a 2 1/2" lift and rub (sometimes hard) when the suspension gets tweaked. I'm looking to downsize to 32". If you stay with the stock springs, your going to have some shiny fenderwells for sure. :D

Here are all three pics. Sorry for screwing this up.

    Before (clean jeep): Before modifications
    After (dirty jeep): After modifications
Flex: Pic showing "safe" flex after modifications

Note that I have a long way to go before full lock because the tires are hitting the front fenders. The amount of flex that I have on my jeep right now is suitable for my driving needs. (I really don't want to cut my fenders)

IT is amazing the interest involved when discussing tires and suspension. My buddies jeep '74 seems to be tightly sprung than mine. Great discussion
