Welding a shortened driveshaft

    For those of you who have shortened driveshafts, how have you welded them? Aren't the yokes cast iron? Or did you use the stick welder, and pre heat and all of that?

    I believe that they are cast steel or forgings made of an alloy that is quite weldable. I've used 7018 on several. Balancing is another matter which, so far, I've been lucky with, possibly because with a T-98 my shaft is so short that it's not as critical.

    They are indeed forged steel, just like your craftsman wrenches. It is quite easy to weld, I just shortened my front shaft about 3 1/4" the other day, the photo was up for several days before taking it down.
