I have a 1961 cj5 and need a windshield frame for it. I've tried two new replacement windshield frames and both had the same problem that the opening for the glass was too big. I don't want to deal with another new one. I believe I would have a much better chance of getting a used rust free windshield frame from a later model from the 70s to early 80s. My question would one of the later models fit ok? I realize the placement of the windshield wipers and motor would be in a different location than my 61 but that doesn't bother me as long as it fits and has no rust. Also I don't plan on putting a hard top on so I don't care if the later models wouldn't accept a hardtop from 1961.

Anything up to '75 will fit fine, and the 70-75 windshield is considered by many to be an upgrade due to the better visibility.

What is the dimensions of the opening on your replacement windshields? Maybe it's something else going on, other than the opening size?

    First post. Welcome from Boston.

This topic has been done to death. Suggest you read old posts. We used to have a technical article with pictures of the various windshields. Would be easy to replicate if it's gone now. Check the forum heading "Technical Index."

Their is about a 3/4 inch gap in the two corners when you install the glass in the reproduction windshields I bought. I've already returned the frames and looked online and found a couple of 1980 frames with glass in very good condition. I clicked on the link that timgr sent and found out I can use the 1980 frame and glass with just a little modification. Thanks very much.

The later frame definitely will not fit your top, if that's important to you.

Suggest you post up pictures of what you have, and we can possibly be more helpful.

The later post '76 frame will physically attach to your hinges, but will be much more angled backwards. It's also narrower at the top part of the frame, so won't fit any soft top or hardtop that you're planning on using.

Why not get a new piece of glass cut that fits the frames properly?

I didn’t know you could get a new glass cut for a windshield because I thought windshield glass wasn’t just a regular piece of glass but was shatterproof glass? I’m not sure where I would go to get something like that but anyway I already sent back the frame and I think I found someone that will sell me a frame the proper size. Do you know if the glass from a 1970 cj5 will fit into a 1961 frame?

I believe the '70 windshield frame is curved at the top and the '61 frame is straight. If it is curved then no it won't fit.

And automotive glass shops can normally cut glass to fit your frame. Unless you're familiar with installing windshield glass you're best bet is to pay to have it cut and installed.

Windshields are laminated glass, any glass shop can cut one and install it.

Years ago I had a new windshield made for my CJ7 at a local shop.
