You could have a problem getting your wheels to clear 12" drums.

I would stay far away from the 12x2 brakes - they are very hard to find parts for. Leave them to the truck owners that can't use anything else.

If you can find some junkyard 11" backing plates from a CJ you can buy all the rest as reman from just about any parts supplier.

The '86 rears will fit ... pretty sure. I wonder about the finned drums though - they might be a problem with earlier wheels. If you can find an early (5-lug) Wagoneer in a yard, those brakes are 11x2 and will work without modification. Like Posimoto wrote, all you need are the backing plates - all else is available at your FLAPS. Take the brake actuator levers on the rear if you want to use the cable emergency brakes. Don't buy any backing plates that have grooves worn into them where the shoes ride - the self-adjusters will hang up on those. You might try to use the drums too, since they are a major part of the cost. Kinda hard to tell in the yard whether they will clean up without a caliper though.

the set from the 81-86 I found are in great shape as far as I can tell I should have plenty of room in the rims since I am running an aftermarket wheel with a real shallow offset (2.5"). It looks like I am gonna stick with those, so far I am still the high bidder at $1.50 but I am sure that won't last. Everything is there except for the wheel cylinders, it has the backing plates, drums and all the other hardware. the guy pulled them for a disc swap on his cj-8.. thanks for the help fellas!
