I just found a New in the Box 15 Gallon CJ5-6-7 gas tank on Facebook market place for $50.00. When I got it home I found out it's the small 1" inlet. In my 56 CJ5 I'm planning on cutting out the V supports for the Pintle hook and installing this tank in the rear. Is the 1" filler neck going to be a problem, and should I punch out the hole and install a larger neck?

Are you planning to replace your under-seat tank or run this in addition to the original?

With the Hurst 4 speed side shifter I would have to cut up the under seat tank to make it fit.

I think this style tank is easier/cheaper to use than the Intermediate style with the larger neck. More and cheaper parts availability for the filler neck. See Mike Boyink's installation of this type of tank. You can find it on the Wayback.

What they said. The earlier large neck is a pain to source parts for and they are dear $

I'm doing this conversion right now as we speak. Your tank looks just like my 78-up tank. 15 gallon.

That's a good price on the tank. Bought mine for $90ish, I think.

I have a Hurst Competition Plus shifting an M20 in my Dauntless CJ5 and have no clearance issues with my stock under -seat fuel tank. Why do you think you can't keep your fuel tank?
The shifter is obviously offset left of the transmission, but I find it more convenient than the stock location due to the short throws when rowing through the gears.

I didn't have and tank interference issues with the Hurst shifter in my 3B either but ended up with a rear tank for other reasons. Perhaps use a different shift cane? I made mine out of aluminum bar stock and with an offset to the right.

Hes running a Ford top loader and his floor is in. Maybe they’re longer/wider? I’ve never had one.

The newer Jeeps with this tank from the factory have extra reinforcement in this area. I can find a picture later when home. Do you have the draw bar now?

Depends on how heavy. I don't plan on towing anything with this jeep, so having recovery shackles on a HD rear bumper, with the diagonal supports removed is good-to-go for me.

A pintle is generally for very heavy loads, and the pintle-hook itself is a substantial piece of weight. Although military jeep trailers do have them, and one came on my M38A1, I've never had reason to use a pintle in modern times. More for big trucks.
