Just rebuilt a T-14/D20 combo for a spare. When I put the front bearing retainer on the T14 it binds up the 2nd and 3rd synchro rings on the gears. Loosen the retainer and pull the input out a little it works fine. I went against my better judgement and used a Crown kit for parts. Any ideas before I tear it apart?

Is this happening without the gasket?
Maybe the gasket provides just enough extra clearance.
But then, the bearing snap ring should be flush with the outside of the case. Is the new snap ring the same as the old?

As opposed to just the front bearing retainer, I am wondering if the rear bearing got driven in too far....IIRC, you drive the rear bearing in and there is a special factory spacer tool (thrust yoke tool W-334) that is used to keep things from getting too tight. Of course, most of us don't have this...anyway, I found I drove things on a bit too tight and was getting binding at the 2nd gear synchro and hub....

Another possibility is dropping a pocket bearing during reassembly.
I would also cross reference the front and rear bearing numbers against the old ones to insure one isn't too wide (wrong bearing).
I honestly don't remember if the rear bearing used a snap ring or the bull gear/spacer to retain the mainshaft. If it is the bullgear, insure the shoulder on the mainshaft is flush with the inner bearing race.

Thanks for the ideas. It's a cold and rainy day here, good for working in the garage, so I guess I'll disassemble and recheck everything.

Took it apart after noticing the cluster gear and the top main shaft gears were not quite aligned and the reverse gear on the main shaft had to much back and forth movement. The rear bearing wasn't pressed on quite far enough so the whole main shaft was to far ahead causing the binding at the 2nd/3rd synchro hub.
