T14/d18 Crossmember Question

Hi all, I'm doing an engine swap in my '55 CJ5 and was potentially planning on using a T14 trans with d18 twin stick(although I do know the 14 was originally mated to a single stick 18 I think). Question is, is the crossmember for the t14 different than the crossmember for the t90 which I have? I'm not very good with navigating the forums but FB gave me a 30 day ban for saying "talk to me goose". Apparently that's bullying. Anyway, here I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    “Talk to me goose”!
    You big bully!

I bought a new x member and mount for my T14 from Kaiser Willys and had to modify it to fit.

    hope that helps.

    Just like Twin2 said above.
Mark and drill holes in the correct places.

Since you mentioned the swap, I think for a T14 you need a large input bore Dana 18. I don't think you can use the case that's currently mated to you T90. You could change the front output over and have a twin stick with a large bore case.
Someone will correct me if I'm wrong, hopefully without bullying.

Yes, the T14 uses the large D18 case, as well as has a 10spline output (as compared to 6 spline for most other options like T90/T98/T18 etc). Hopefully the OP got the T14/D18 combo as a unit so will avoid any of these complications, and is not trying to mate a T14 to a small D18 case from the original 55 cj5 or the like.

Yup I would need a large hole. I only have the transmission at this point. The way it looks right now is I may stay with the t90. I like the deeper first on the 14 but I suppose it is what it is. For reference, I’m swapping in a VW TDI

You probably already know this...The T90C version has a lower first gear than the T14 (3.34 as compared to 3.1), but I think that is only available with the short input shaft (somebody will correct me if I am wrong). It seems the 2.79 long input shaft is the common one for many v6 and sbc swaps....I have no idea what you would use for the VW TDI swap...good luck

I would be hesitant to voluntarily install a T14 in anything. I have found them to be marginal at best behind the V6, seeing many of them implode under just about any circumstance. The 1.9 TDI's HP and torque specs are lower then the 225, which may be your saving grace.

It is very possible to bore the small hole D18 to the large hole specs. I have one done that way. You would probably need the ring that goes between them.

I'm with jeepdaddy, consider a different transmission. T14 and T90 would not be on my list. Have you seen the Millennium Falcon tdi build? CJ3A Volkswagon TDI
