    Hi,
My Jeep is complete enough that I want to take it out. My dilemma is what kind of plates/ insurance to get. I would like to drive it occasionally during the summer and probably just when it snows in the winter since it is the only 4x4 I have. I would like to take it off road once in a while too. I have read that others have gotten the antique truck insurance and regist. and just not reported any damage incurred off road. This would be fine for me since I do auto body professionally. I like the price of antique vs the regular since I can't see paying that much for something I'm not going to drive everyday, can't really afford it. On the other hand, I live in PA and I'm not sure if I can get the antique plates since I have parts on there from all sorts of different years. It is a '68, but I put the 70's windshield frame on for the new top to fit. The rear lights aren't exactly original and neither is the tire carrier.

    What would you guys do?

    Josh

About how much does that cost you per month?

I have liability (~$100 per year) also...but it is registered as an Antique ($17/ year registration). That seems pretty cheap to me.

Were they real picky about originality when getting the antique registration/ plates?

Wow! What state are you in? I've heard in PA they have you send in various angled pics of your vehicle, then have someone (?) evaluate them.

I probably would have passed even if someone went out to look:

....I don't know how they would know what is original on an old JEEP. A windshield frame surely isn't going to tip you off. My spare tire carrier is an original aftermarket ;)

    Goober,
Is that under standard registration or antique?

We can tell you from years of experience in PA that you won't be able to get the antique tags. They are the pickiest place I know and we've both spent plenty of time there with multitudes of antique vehicles registered there.

Just get normal plates and liability only.

Wow. In 1968 the switch from top to bottom mount wipers occured. I can't imagine a state employee noticing the difference in the curve of the windshield. As for tail lights:
    http://www.film.queensu.ca/CJ3B/Dating/Taillights.html

mine has the original Hall tail lights, but the tail lights switch also occured in 1968, and repro's aren't very expensive that would match.

If you are going to save a significant amount and these are the only 2 concerns I would go for it.

I just did a quick quote on the Allstate web site. I have a clean driving record. $160 for 6 months at minimum values including multiple insurance discounts for standard insurance.

Hahaha, I can't imagine someone other than us being able to pick apart whether it was really "original" or not. ;)

I am sure liability is cheaper in Kansas, but I should qualify that mine is insured as a "Sunday driver". This is through state farm with multicar and multiple policy discount and clean record. I have to promise I drive it less than 5000 miles a year and not to/from work as a daily driver. They even send a questionaire once a year requesting updated information, (which happens to include an odometer reading ;) ).

Exactly what I was thinking. I would like to see their database of info if they are so good at ID'ing originality in every make of old car that exists.

    State Farm does that????

They've never asked me for a mileage, ever.

Heck, the speedo in my CJ-5 didn't work for several years so no odo.
