I happen to have this diff on hand and wondering if it will fit my 73 with a D44.

It is a 19 spline
How does a fella identify a series 3 from a series 4?
Any help appreciated.

 

By the date, I would think it would have come from a tapered axle. Is that right?
Could I get some 19 spline shafts and use it in my older cj's?

 

When they have the 44 STD cast in them normally a good indicator they are for a Dana 44 4 series case. 4 series case fits 3.92:1 down to 5.38:1 gear ratios. If it said auto then It most likely would be a 3 series case which is 3.73:1 to 2.54:1 ratios.
If 19 spline then most likely came from a tapered axle application. With a Powerlock you can interchange the side gears between 10, 19, 27, and 30 splines. Not so with an open case. You would need to use the side bearings (carrier bearings) for the 19 spline case. 30 spline cases used different bearings. In other words you can change the side gears from 19 spline you have to 30 spline and use it in your flanged 44 if
the gear ratio is right. I have some 30 spline units available if interested. Pm would be best so we follow the rules.

 

OK, so some tapered axles were 19 spline. I didn't know. Both mine are 10 spline. I also had no idea how to identify the series 3 and 4.
