IMG_2864.jpeg Turned out to be a nice day off so I thought I’d huff a little spray paint!

The CFO advised me that this was not the paycheck to order parts with…We’ll see about the next one.

IMG_2891.jpeg It might look like a Dana18 but it’s actually a collection of parts from around the Forum.

Looks good. I ran a bead of the Right Stuff around the shims as an added measure. There is one through bolt on the pan nearest to the drain.
I sealed it and thought it was good. Still leaked. I would put a couple wraps of teflon on the threads and then pipe dope or sealant on it the next time.

I don’t know if this is common or not but there’s also one more pan bolt open to the case. I think it’s the one at about 1300 in relation to the plug. Looks like a relief hole from manufacturing.

Maybe depends on the case or I missed it. Most likely missed it as that is the way it usually works. :)

IMG_2903.jpeg IMG_2902.jpeg IMG_2900.jpeg Well, posting these pics should keep me honest…
Originally, I was going to just swap out D18’s to keep 2 running vehicles when I take Mrs T’s Honda out of service for some rust issues. But I am still a week or two out on a couple of parts for the new 18. So, why not try some body work. I’m going to need the experience for the Honda anyway.
Original pic is all trans tunnel pcs in place. Note the vibration (?) hole at the bottom right of the shift tower.
Welded that closed yesterday, painted today.
Next is the trans cover. Patch the old single stick hole (and PO’s enlargement of said hole) and screw holes.
Found a few cracks and other problems that need to be addressed while it’s out.
This is my first foray in any kind of bodywork so as for now, learning and having some fun!
Better learn here than Mrs T’s Honda.
Thanks to All again for everything I have learned here! IMG_2894.jpeg

IMG_2904.jpeg IMG_2905.jpeg Not that I thought it would be, but not nearly as easy as you guys make it look!
Weld, grind, weld, grind…HOLYSH17! look at the size of that hole…More weld grind…..

It’s a couple thousand miles from perfect but I’ll take it!

Mixed up some JB weld for filler, sand tomorrow.

I'm sorry, did we forget to mention sprinkling pixie dust on the metal? :D

IMG_2922.jpeg IMG_2920.jpeg IMG_2908.jpeg View attachment 86448 IMG_2900.jpeg View attachment 86448 Rebuilt D18 is in, clutch is adjusted and all seems well, some light noise on deceleration…we’ll see what that’s all about.
Front seal from the Novak rebuild kit went in sweet, rear seal I ruined. Quick trip to Napa replaced it just fine but after I bolted it in and filled it, it was leaking from the front output!
Darn , I screwed up the rear did i hose the front too?
I bought new top lock nuts from Novak. Turns out they will hit 115 ft/lbs turning the lock on the output threads. Gave it a little more umph and no more leak!
Pics are of my first attempts at “body work”, filling in the old hacked out single stick shift hole.
I was a bit disappointed that the new twin stick needed relief to work in my fresh rattle canned dog house but I like it anyway.
Just need to find a shift boot to cover the fresh hacking!

You mentioned it, but I used it on the…ahem, south end not the metal. You should be more clear with the instructions

    IMG_2953.jpeg Just a quick update,
Since the D18 rebuild and install, I have been mostly daily driving with short exceptions like my ignition wiring drama http://www.earlycj5.com/xf_cj5/index.php?threads/156732/

Otherwise, money’s tight only small things accomplished like wrapping the muffler with a heat shield (directly under gas tank/driver seat and clutch cable passes over the top too), adjusting the clutch and adding a lighter return spring (what a difference!) and my favorite, adding a hand throttle to the shift cane!
I remember asking someone on here about theirs and the reply was how nice it was. Understatement! I love it, haven’t used the gas pedal in a month!
As always, thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!

This is a “note to self” kind of post.
Since the rotten wire episode it’s been getting progressively harder to start in the morning. Recently even hard starting when up to temp.
Hopefully Sunday I can get under the hood.
    Check plugs
    Check points/condenser
    Hunt for more rotten wires
    Set up vacuum gauge
    Check timing
    Adjust 2g as needed

As always, your advice is appreciated.
Let’s see if I can get through this one without asking silly questions!
