Not specifically an early CJ question but here goes. How can I keep the rust from blossoming on this chrome piece?
This is the housing for my Cutlass locking hubs. Pics are before and after a wire brush and a few minutes on the buffing wheel.
I live at the beach so it will probably only take a month or two to be back to the “before”.

Wire brushing chrome is really bad for the chrome finish, buffing is the proper method, provided you use the correct compound. If the chrome has been pitted, there is no real way to “fix” it, short of re-plating. You can use buffered phosphoric acid solution (like Ospho) to help neutralize the rust pitting, then buff the chrome. This will help keep the rust from returning for a while.
Sealing the finish will help retard the rust, using a heavy wax. You could use a product like CRC corrosion inhibitor, but this leaves a waxy slightly amber coating that remains a little tacky, but it will preserve the finish for a long period. The chrome will look more dull with the CRC coating.
Paint clear coat over chrome doesn’t hold up well, but its easy to strip off once it starts to peel and flake. The chrome finish is too slick for paint to “bite” or adhere properly, unless you sand/ruin the finish.
