I pulled the transmission and transfer case last weekend and replaced seals. I still have a leak in the transmission in the front. Drip between bell housing and transmission. I am thinking leaking around the counter shaft. That will wait until winter. How are folks sealing this? A little gasket sealer on the end of the shaft? Thanks

A little RTV goes a long way!
Yes, I put some black RTV on my countershaft ends during overhaul. I wiped off all squeeze out after the shaft was placed.

I had the same question, and smeared some RTV on the shaft end that abuts the bell housing adapter. No leaks yet.

Since then I have learned from this forum, that the hole in your case may be wallowed out due to wear, etc…

Something to check before you put it all back in.

What they said about the countershaft bore. When I rebuild one during installation of the shaft I put RTV in the bore then wipe off the excess. You will probably be fine with cleaning the end of shaft and whatever is exposed of the bore with brake cleaner or something that will not leave any residue and then packing it with RTV. My weapon of choice is either Ultra Black or The Right Stuff. Both work well.
While you have it out check for residue around the front bearing retainer bolts. The lube can follow the threads out. I use RTV on the threads here too. Remember, just enough to do the job. Most people use way too much.

I wonder if I could drain some oil, pull the tranny back a bit, clean the surfaces, blop some oil resistant RTV in the hole and put it back together? everything up
I was thinking this too. I can drain some oil, back the tranny out a couple inches, clean it up and put a dollop of Ultra Black in there. Then bolt up the tranny and wait 24 hors before refilling. It would get me down the road for a while. And yes, light coated all the threaded bolts that are through bores

Got home from work, no new oil in the floor of the garage. I’ll take it for a spin and see what happens then
