Putting the engine back together and was wondering which post should be #1 cylinder? The one right above the window? Also, approx. what direction should the vacuum advance be pointing?

I just did a distributor swap. Here’s where my advance sits. The points window is at approx. 7’o’clock

Oddfire caps like yours are marked.

You will want to insure the engine is at compression TDC on #1 and align the rotor under that tower when installing.

Unlike millions of even fire engines, the oddfire must use the indicated tower or the engine won't run right.

If you install dist where the vacuum pot is close to the T-Stat housing then you can have access to the points adjuster through the window with a flex GM tool to adjust dwell without getting into the fan.

    Great information from all, thanks.
This Buick engine is new to me so learning as I go. I'm use to SBC's so the Buick is like working on a foreign car. The cap is indeed numbered 1-6 and based on the firing order of 165432 it spins CW. So the front cover and dizzy that came with the engine was toast, so I bought a used one from a Forum member. The dizzy I took out used a different cap. The window was rotated to a different spot. Does that mean it was an "even fire" dizzy and I bought an "odd-fire" replacement? Is the cam the same in both engines? Am I screwed now?

The oddfire points cap has equally separated towers with an elongated tang on the rotor. The points cam had oddly spaced lobes.

Instead of typing a lot of explanations, I'll refer you to this......
http://www.britishv8.org/Articles/B... located at 120 degrees around the crankshaft.

You can stick the distributor anywhere. The key is to keep the vacuum advance from fouling anything and having access to the points door, especially when the engine is running.

Lots of good info there thanks. This engine really is "odd". Makes it sound like a simple task of setting the timing is a major event. When I first looked at the points cam, I thought it was worn out.

Odd but wonderful. In order to dampen the vibration, Buick installed a big flywheel. Not conducive to low drag times but great offroad.

FYI, the stock vacuum advances for these motors had a 90* nipple on the can to help keep the hose out of the fan.
