Maybe to position the flex line in the safest location for vibration, and away from the exhaust?

Definitely agree with that too. The exhaust of course was part of my reference to keeping it cool.

Only saying, because I noticed on my 'new' M38 that the fuel line enters the military pump at the front of the vehicle. Per the PO it goes all the way forward before leaving the firewall, and loops back 180º around in front of the lower radiator hose, and directly over the engine mount.

Not sure it is totally OEM but impressed me as a good idea.

Well, since the replacements have the inlet on the front side, and everyone I've used is on the front side........

The carburetors are on opposite sides of a L134 and F134 and the fuel pumps are made to fit either engine.

With the F134 I clock the pump so the inlet is towards the rear use a 90 degree fitting for the flex line to the frame, and route the line to the carburetor around the front of the engine. On an L134 I leave the inlet toward the front, use a 90 degree fitting for the flex line to the frame, and a steel line from the rear facing outlet to the carburetor.
