I'm not all that good at internet so pictures aren't quite doable.

    Basically what it was,
Positive cable from the battery to the solenoid at the starter.
Another smaller wire from the battery to the fender solenoid which then fed from the other main post on the fender solenoid to the S terminal on the starter solenoid.
Then a blue wire from the S post on the fender to the key.
And there was a wire from the positive terminal at the starter that ran to the alternator which was a 3 wire that was wired to a voltage regulator on the fender and is what I assume to be the cause of the fried wiring.

Thanks. I bought it from the original owner in '82, I think. Tens of thousands of miles since the 4X4 conversion. Works great. I call it the Tin Lizard, but Petel's moon buggy moniker is pretty good too.

I just noticed, the starter that's on the Jeep now only has the Positive terminal and the S terminal.
My new starter also has an R terminal.
Did I buy the wrong starter?

No, the r terminal is just included on some solenoids. Less parts to stock shelves.

    Cool,
    So just ignore that terminal?

I've put a little to much faith in Rock Auto the past week or so and have collected a couple parts that are just 100% wrong and can't even be made to work.

They used the fender solenoid to boost the power from the key to the starter solenoid.

    IMHO, a better set up:
Starter wire from key to fender solenoid S terminal
Battery cable from the battery to the solenoid stud.
Battery cable from opposite stud to the starter.
Jump wire from main starter stud to starter solenoid terminal.

You can run the alternator wire to the battery stud on the solenoid.
You can also use the stud for other applications, such as light relays etc....

Considering this was a farm Jeep that actually is a possibility.
Came out of a South Georgia plantation and from what I have been told it had a large platform on top where people could stand and work.

But judging from what I've seen it wasn't thought out very well hehe

    Your picture is stock GM.
Battery cable with the main feed for the chassis on the main stud.
Solenoid wire from the key (purple)
    12V bypass (green)
You can move all that to the fender.

Sounds like you’re finding a solution that works. I just wanted to mention that if it’s a spliced together mess—wires everywhere, a what-in-hell is going here on type situation—then it may be a good opportunity to isolate functional components from the ignition switch down, clean things up and make some simple upgrades. The circuits on these are really simple, and of course there’s many ways to make things work. I see no real need for 2 starter solenoids.
Anyway, there’s a Toyota starter which fits the V6 which is small, light and high powered. The 10-12si three wire alternator has become almost a standard upgrade—also simple and easy. And if you have a Delco distributor, then the Pertronix ignition and coil are easy worthwhile upgrades. If you redo some wiring, then at least you know what you have and where things go.

    I'll be rewiring from scratch.
That ignition circuit was the only circuit that worked on the entire Jeep.
I was just curious as to why they would use the 2 solenoid setup
