Not an 8-32 or 6-24 machine bolt. What size is this bolt that holds the choke cable in place?

Can you determine if it is a #8 diameter hole or a #6?
    I don't know the required screw size but #8 machine screws can be 32 (N.C), 36 (N.F.) or 40 (N.S.) t.p.i.; #6 can be 32 (N.C.), 40 (N.F.) or 36 (N.S.) t.p.i.

8 is closest. 6 is too small

I am bolt and screw challenged, but there might be a '' set screw" with allen head that might fit. Those seem to have threads that are different from most screws. Can you take it off and go to your local FLAPS or hardware store?

set screws are generally standard thread pitches, unless you have metric ones

Likewise, I can also pull and measure my threads.
Dale’s day has a 3 hour head start so we’ll see who comes in first!

An 8-32 tap fits nice and snug in the hole. The die would not take the screw that was in it. Weird like the OP so it must be original.
I would run an 8-32 tap through it [brass] and use an 8-32 screw.

Try the set screw from the headlight knob

Well, took mine to the flaps this morning

the screw wouldn’t work in a 8-32 but would work in a 10-32 but it was a bit loose going in but still tightened down.

would not work in a 10-24

couldn’t find any metric sizes that would work.

    I’m interested in Andrew’s assessment.

FWIW, the ends of those screws are peened over usually to prevent it from backing all the way out. Probably why it will not screw into an 8-32 nut or thread checker. The brass will expand enough to allow it to come out and that’s why it feels tight.

Yep and usually a lot less of a thread selection than for other fasteners. My guess is that is 8-32. A bottom tap will clear the threads (pull the choke wire out while chasing threads) and then use blue locker on the set screw.

An 8-32 tap went in with fingers only. I agree with Nate. The threads look a little flattened with a magnifying glass.

I didn’t measure diameter but 20 is the closest I found to match the threads.
It is a weird screw, the threads aren’t pitched as usual, the looked almost vertical like a hose clamp screw.

I tapped the hole to 8-32 machine bolt, put in a new choke cable and ran it to the carb. Problem solved. Next item on the list...

What can I put around the choke cable sheath so it clamps in place? Currently too small, the clamp won't hold it firm enough. I tried electrical tape but that lasted all of 2 choke pulls.

Wrap bailing wire around it to make it bigger.

I was going to say you might try splitting the casing of a previously fired .22 cartridge and sliding it on but I like jeep2003 suggestion better
