Single Stick D18 Not Getting Into 4 Low

    Hey guys one of our members didn't get to play today because the single stick D18 transfercase wasn't going all the way into 4low. Might try some quick stuff tomorrow morning but we just didn't have much to work with today. It has a locker in the front and warn locking hubs. One thought was the hubs weren't reassembled correctly but I'm not convinced.

    I think we just need to jack the front up and start spinning stuff. What are your suggestions for order of trouble shooting?

    Well, on a single stick, if it's in low, it has to be 4-low, so was it in low? Was the front DS turning? If so, and you don't think the front end was pulling, then yes, look at the hubs.

    Since I've never owned one I feel entitled to thereby be automatically enabled to mindlessly, i.e.- "authoritatively", regurgitate commonly held in-bubbled knowledge about the general undesirability of the single lever case due to excessive crummy linkage design that will fall apart as soon as it drives of the dealer floor.

    Or it might be something else. :rolleyes:

    Ok, I'll do the basic troubleshooting tomorrow. I think one of the venders had a set of drive flanges that will work if needed.

    No need for a jack just yet
    Unlock the hubs
    Put the t case on what you think is neutral
    Does the driveshaft spin easy?
    If it does, lock both hubs
    Does it still spin?
    Yes=problem, no=ok
    Put t case in 4wd low with hubs unlocked.
    Does it spin? No= ok, yes = fuct
    Now how drive it. Does it drive like it's low?
    Yes = good, no = bad
    If any of the above equalled problemfuctbad
    It's time for a tear down.

    well I really don't see where a locker/hubs have anything to do with
    shifting the transfer case . as howard said . linkage is problematic due to wear

    I'd start with plenty of oil on the linkages. Get out and get under, see if there is any obstruction by the body or whatever. Simple stuff first!

    What Pete said. I always liberally lube the whole shift linkage area. That wagoner was so dry it wouldn't go into Low but, that WAS a different animal. Start simple.
