I have been doing some research on this trying to determine if I want to twin stick my D18 when I do the SM420 swap. It occurs to me that I don't want the shifters 1/2 way back the PS. I can make my own shifters, linkages and mounts. My question is will a single stick Dana 18 shift like a twin stick or is there something internal that will prevent this? Apologies if I have missed this answer in one of the threads. Thanks as always

I don't believe the pill is required to be removed. It only prevents 2wd low and twin sticks would have it at birth.

This could be the case with an existing twin stick arrangement...do more research.
I assumed from the posters question that he has a single stick now.
I considered the same modification with my single stick D18 when I overhauled it.

The factory twin stick also has the pill to prevent 2wd-low, but it can be removed if you want that functionality. The single stick NEEDS the pill in place to function.

I kind of wish I had done that when I put the T-18 in my '71. It would have been cleaner to use the single stick front cover/rails to make a triple shifter that put the OD and transfercase levers on a single pivot shaft.

What I ended up with works, but is kind of messy and I had to do a lot of lever bending to clear the passenger seat and other levers:

It was also a pain getting the rod for the overdrive shifter past the twin stick housing. Every subtle bend here is critical to clear the floor and the twin stick housing:
