I know this is here somewhere but I can't find it. As I creep through Market Place I find CJ5s that are obviously not the correct year. I am watching a 1975 CJ5 that is 1971 or older and has top mounted wipers and a F134. Can someone link my up? Thanks

Lots of differences over the years but big changes happened for the 72 model year. The frame & front clip were lengthened several inches to accommodate the AMC straight 6. Look at the space between the front wheel well and front of the body tub & it's easy to tell.
    72-up.

Thanks for the reply. I am really looking for the 55-71 changes. Like when did the battery box go away. When did the wipers move from top to bottom. When did the shackle reversal switch to "normal". Stuff like that.

    63, I think?
69, but it's easy to swap a windshield so don't get hung up on that detail.
Reverse shackles were 55 only. holdover from the military M38A1.

The road to Enlightenment is long and has many forks, Little Grasshopper.

Respectfully disagree. I've owned two '56 models with the 'reverse' shackles. One was originally sold and titled as 1957.

Don't get too hung up on details, remember that many (most?) CJ's are frankenjeeps, a mix & match of parts. Things like fenders, hoods, windshields, enginges, transmissions etc etc etc often get changed. If you have questions about a particular Jeep, post up a couple pics & someone here can probably identify it!

My 64 has the welded battery box lid and the water fording/snorkle cut-out on the hood. Maybe it was an end-of-year 63 build at the factory that was sold as a "64".

I also have a WS from a 69 model :D. Really helps to see stop lights and read street signs now.

yes! My CJ5 that is titled as a 58 (since the late 80s) has factory looking front shackle reversal. that and the speedometer make me think it's a 55 or 56, but who knows what's original on these old jeeps.

Thats another thing, in the old days many vehicles got titled as the year they were sold vs year of manufacture.

Mine has all features of a 56, but titled as a '57 by the dealer.

Interestingly has "56" in chalk or crayon marked on the firewall. Anyone else ever seen something like that?

There were running changes through the years. Most of this I found comparing a '55 to a '59. Feel free to correct me if I got the years wrong.

Sometime between '55 & '59 the welded nuts on the body cg=hanged from square welded on all corners of oval ones held on with one spot weld.

    Tub funnies new weld nut_1.JPG

The side brace on the passenger side wheel well bot bigger- width-early = 1.5" '59(at leadt)l is 2"

'55-'56 didn't have the driver's side heater cutout or fresh air intake on the grill.

'55-'56-mid '57 had the "reverse" shackles in front.

'55 speedos were fancy chrome King-Seely , '56 were the same unit but not as fancy. Mid year '57 they changed to Stewart-Warner units at the same time 12 volts became an option.

Sometime between '55 & '59 the wiring changed from cloth insulation to plastic- I'm thinking along with the 12 V thing.

I believe it was '64 when they changed the seats from the single piece spring sprung units to the folding foam rubber ones. Some people say '66.

Battery box cover & hood snorkel cutout went away in '66?

Parking lights changed a bit over the years.

Tail lights changed a bit over the years.

Tool box latches changed as well, don't know when. :(

PTO shifter hole flange- Rolled all the way around vs. half way around don't know when. :(

Door frame seat mount holes- Three w/welded nuts vs. four w/ tapped plate don't know when. :(

    Rear floor hat channel - 1 vs. 2 don't know when. :( (I now have three :D)

Seat belt mounts don't know when. :(

Top bow side pockets reinforcement don't know when. :(

Backup lights don't know when. :(

Side markers - '70 HAH- Knew that one!

Note also the "8" speedo was '56. Later dials went to "9"

Like 80mph wasn't enough for an f-head's top end.

That is very interesting about the PTO shift hole being semi-flanged on later models. My full flange '56 rubbed on the pto case until I hammered the **** out of it. Now I know I'm not the first!

That was the common practice at Jeep dealers. My 67 CJ may be an extreme example as it is titled as a 69-when I bought it new.
