I've heard of these but never actually seen one...I think this qualifies as "rare"

That’s a nice but scary buy especially with the roof rust it has. Unfortunately vinyl tops harbored rust

100+ pictures and not a single one of the front axle. I was wondering if it had that funky IFS suspension, but I found a pic where you can see enough to see it’s the standard solid axle. Looks small though; were they D30s in the front?

 

Closed knuckle 44?

 

IFS only used in 63 and only with 230 OHC if I recall.

According to Torque King 4x4, 62-70 is a D27. 71-73 as an oddball closed knuckle D30. 74 and up is D44. Somewhere around 80 or 81 they went to driver's side drop.

Thats a cool project but IMHO, to be a Super Wagoneer, it should have been built with more than a 327. Since those were the Kaiser years, I'm not knowledgeable about what other powerplants Kaiser had access to.

 

We had a 66 Wagoneer when I was about 13 or 14 that we drove on the beach.
I loved that thing. The salt and sand finally got the best of it though.

What makes it rare? Better yet, what makes it a super wagoneer? I don't know my full size jeeps at all and like to know about them.

 

I can tell you that the wood grain, the vinyl top, bucket seats, and automatic floor shift were much fancier than the one we had. Those are probably all a part of the Super Wagoneer package. I really don't like a vinyl top on any vehicle. They trap in the moisture and always rust out. My parents were always going for the fake wood grain. If I got one of these that would be the first thing to go. The Wagoneer was a solid platform. Luxury with decent off-road performance.

Basically a Wagoneer loaded with a bunch of bells, whistles and shiny things. They came with the V8 with a 4 barrel instead of the standard 2 barrel. Console shifter. Lots of added trim, special wheel covers, A/C, tilt column, bucket seats etc. They didn’t make many of them. I want to say around 1400.

 

Trucks and Wagoneers with the 327 never came factory with a 4bbl intake. The Super Wagoneer was essentially a trim package - seats, the console with clock and shifter. The wheel covers on it are not original. It would have had those spoke wheels that are pictured on the garage floor, although only three are pictured and two of those have been painted. Badges are unique, this one is missing the gunsights on the hood.

 

I have a Kaiser “parts particular to..” supplement for the Super Wagoneer. It’s pages long of a parts list of what sets this one apart from a regular Wagoneer. These were pretty special.

Deferring to my supplement of 26 pages, the “Super Custom Wagoneer, model 164 with V8 engine” did in fact come with a 4 bbl carb. The intake is part #3201173, and the carb is part #3181445. There are a several unique engine parts for the 4bbl version including valve spring dampers (inner spring), chrome oil cap, and air cleaner. The parts book lists both a “hydramatic” (automatic) version of the 327 engine, as well as a “standard” 3 speed transmission version. Later floor plate and console listings refer to the standard 3 speed, vs automatic.
Those gunsight hood ornaments are part #971209 and 971210 (L /R). There are pages of trim parts, both interior and exterior, unique to this Wagoneer. These all had a tilt steering column.
The hubcaps are part #942394 described as “wheel trim cover (Spinner type)”. There is no illustration, but I think the three cast examples shown (what I call “Mag style”) are not correct. I believe the Super Wagoneer had a polished stainless hubcap w/spinner that resembles those on a ‘65 Corvette. It has 6 flat highly polished “spokes”. I have period brochures that show these. To collaborate this, there is a unique “acorn type” lug nut for the Super Wagoneer.

Jubilee Jeeps - 327 Vigilante

 

I used to have an 88 XJ Wagoneer with the woodgrain trim (recently totaled in an accident). I own a pretty nice looking CJ & a very clean OBS F250, but that beat up XJ got more attention than either of them! I was constantly having people shout "love your Jeep!" while driving it, & more than once had people offering to buy it. It's a kitschy thing I guess.
