I recently acquired a Saginaw power steering gearbox, but it didn’t come with a pitman arm.

My existing manual version won’t fit it, as the splined shaft is larger on the PS box. I’ve found some on eBay but, if anyone here has one…

Oh. I could use a “rag” joint for it, too.

I’ll get specific measurements and update this thread later today.

    Thanks!

    Jon B.

That arm was next to the one I bought last fall right? It should work nicely, but Do you want to get the center to center on the holes and the spline count / splined hole diameter for clarity.
And when it works perfectly the next fella will know what to look for. ;)

Well first off let me say that no parts will interchange between Jeep manual Saginaw 525 gear boxes and Jeep power 800 gear boxes. Both the input and the output shaft diameters are different between them.

The standard Jeep 800 power pitman center to center arm length is 6-1/2” and it has zero drop.
The power pitman arm I have available (shown above) is 5-1/2” long with a 3/4” drop.

Most but not all Jeep manual and power boxes used a bellcoupler connection at the box input.
On some Jeeps a rag joint was used.
Like previously mentioned the power and the manual bellcouplers are of different diameters.

My existing arm is little, if any, drop, and is 6-3/4” center to center. However…

The power box that I have is faster (as in fewer turns stop-to-stop) than the old one, so shorter is probably better, so as to slow it down somewhat.

More drop is good, since the new suspension will have significant lift (3-4”) over stock.

Again - as is becoming way too common - I don’t even know what I don’t know.
The manual box has/had a bell coupler (I didn’t know what they’re called) vs. a rag joint, but the input shaft is, as you mentioned, different.

What year and model is your Jeep ?
The advantage to a bellcoupler is that it allows for greater frame flex.
The advantage to a rag joint is simplicity and probably lasts longer with less wear.

I would be interested in the 5 1/2" pitman arm you mentioned if Jon B. does not want it. Just let me know.

This is a ‘72-75 collection of parts & pieces. Frame is a ‘75, box mount is from a ‘74, as is the manual box.

The steering column will likely be an aftermarket tilt style, so I’ll see what it takes to mate it to the box.

You didn’t mention a price… Zip is 56237 for shipping cost.

I did not price it yet because I forgot what I paid for it. I’ll look into it if it suits your need. I can sell the rag joint shaft for $5. So it’s mostly ship cost.
I need full address to get estimate on odd sized packages shipped via usps.

For an intermediate cj I would expect that you need a standard 6-1/2” length pitman arm. The amount of drop depends on leaf springs or lift.
The shorter pitman arms work well for flat fender jeeps having saginaw conversions.

I decided to buy the EBay unit - 6-1/2” long; 2+ “ of drop.

Also, the spline on the input shaft matches the manual box, so I can cobble something together using that.
