What can you all tell me about these old KS fuel gauges? Seems it was used in early willys....but it doesn't look like the early wagon dash, nor the SW little round gauges used in the big round speedo cluster...., but looks like it might(?) fit in the big round speedo cluster and just has a different non round face cover? Is it a 6V gauge (unlike the later SW gauges that were 12V in and then reduced to 5V with the internal bimetallic VR thingy)?

Look like the one I had in my '55 KS, or later SW speedo for that matter. The markings are a bit different though., might be out of a '56 "white needle". I don't think I've ever pulled a factory speedo apart where the gauge faces were round although I have noticed the newer repros have them.

Wonder how you can tell if its an early 6V gauge or the later 12V with bimetallic VR in it?

The cj '55 - mid '57 King-Seely units have two terminals on the fuel gauge & use an external regulator. The later Stewart Warner's have 3 terminals on the fuel gauge with an internal VR.

I'm pretty sure the KS VR's will handle 12V just fine.

As long as the external VR is used? .....I would be using this in place of the SW 12V gauge with the 3 post, internal regulator.

So I am thinking I could use this 12V to 6V external VR to make one of these older KS gauges work (mostly, these older KS guages are more readily available than the later 3 post SW gauges)....
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07SGJSLDL/ref=ox_sc_act_title_1?smid=A3CX4TQNUXMB0L&th=1
they also make it in a 12V to 5V, but I think the 6V is what would be the best fit?

So the gauge I posted above is like $50: https://www.ebay.com/itm/325990672540?_trkparms=amclksrc=ITM&aid=1110025&algo=HOMESPLICE.COMPOSITELISTINGS&ao=1&asc=20220405142716&meid=12df788d56cb46889d036aeb2a14265a&pid=101506&rk=6&rkt=25&sd=335195103115&itm=325990672540&pmt=0&noa=1&pg=4247815&algv=AlgoIndex5SimRanker&brand=Willys&_trksid=p4247815.c101506.m1851
Or I think this KS gauge is even a bit older (notice the dots and not the lines for the gauge markings?): https://www.ebay.com/itm/335195103115

The only SW 3post unit I have found is this one as part of a pair (unmatched pair), but I only want the fuel gauge - but $135 is a lot, and it ships from overseas which makes me a bit more hesitant.

Heck, I am considering buying this entire round speedo cluster just for the fuel gauge:
