I hesitate to brag about this because I don't want to jinx it, but I put my T18/D18/OD together about 9 months ago with Right Stuff and it's still dry...no leaks! I've never had a truly leak free 18 before!

For paper gaskets, I use Permatex copper spray. I use Permatex #2 or Aviation on the shafts and on bolt threads, and yoke splines.
I use a skim of The Right Stuff on valve cover and pan gaskets, and a bead on V8 intake valleys.

The Permatex #2 is silicone unlike the old stuff that was a bear to remove. For a silicone, I have had good luck with the Right Stuff in an oil environment.

Right Stuff is what to use. Make sure the metal surfaces are clean and free of oil film.

Not according to the MSDS. The material safety data sheet does not list any silicone in its chemical makeup.

The Permatex #2 I use is the nasty brown stuff with the brush in the cap. It looks like thick molasses. Isopropyl alcohol is about the only thing to get it off your hands.

You are correct. I had done a quick look from here. Still a nasty product to clean up IMO.

Timely thread. I'm getting ready to do a rear main seal on my TJ and was debating in my head what to use on the oil pan gasket. I'm sure RTV would seal it but I'm afraid of blobs breaking off on the inside and clogging the oil pickup. I'm a fan of aviation #2 sealer but that goes on relatively thin. I suppose I'll have to see if there are any significant imperfections in my oil pan. I also should see what the FSM calls for.

Ah, if auto manufacturers would just make all cast oil sumps, gear covers and valve covers with O-Rings like my xt500 yamaha. :bananatool:.

Long, long ago in a galaxy far, far away I was a technical trainer for Honda motorcycle. Crankcase halves were bolted together with the tiniest smear of sealant. No gasket. We strongly cautioned against over application of any sealant, especially RTV. To illustrate the point we once bolted a CB750 bottom end together dry. No Leaky.

Thats how I assemble VW air cooled engines; Permatex aviation brushed on the case half. Never had a leak,

I have sealed split motorcycle cases and transmissions and used the Honda recommended sealer with no problems. It was a silicone base like Ultra Gray.

Off on a tangent, but I used permatex gasket remover after I got the lions share of the gasket removed. I'm not sure what any of your experience is with that product, but I'm not sure how much more effective it is than any other liquid. You certainly don't see gasket material melting off the metal!

Whatever you use, just make sure it's compatible with the fluid it's containing. Chrysler had about 3 different rtv's for axles. If you mixed 2 if them together they would react and get white crystally snowy stuff growing from it. They also had red gasket maker gooop that worked on transmission and tcase halves. The grey stuff they use on the 3.6 will glue just about anything together. Isn't rubbery like silicon rtv's

Right. I believe it was a Japanese product called 3 Bond (not 3M). The process was to apply the thinnest possible bead from the tiny squeeze tube, then wipe it off with your finger. The remaining nearly imperceptible film was all that was required.
