x2,my earliest memories are of my older brother, my dad, and grandpa riding in an old strip down model A truck hauling camping gear into the mountains. With all of those smells. Ah million dollar memories.

Exactly. My 74 has these vents on the fuel tank leading to the charcoal cannister behind the left front fender well. then any fuel smell/vapors are bled off the cannister via a rubber vent hose to the air cleaner snorkel. Never had the first problem or fuel smells with this system, the charcoal cannister will absorb and store any fuel vapors until the engine is started then the venturi effect action inside the air cleaner snorkel will pull them away to be burned. no reason to deactivate it, has no effect on engine performance or fuel economy. Your TSM in the Emissions section should explain all details of the system. Problem fixed.:bananatool:

This. Water in the tank can be drawn into the carb and cause starvation issues there.
It will run fine. Pre emissions cars ad trucks ran this system for sixty years. You need a vented fuel cap.
You can set up a closed system and install a canister but is means added lines and expense for the loss of some minor fumes.

A fuel fill tube, a vent to allow air in as fuel is used or a vented cap, a return line from the front of the engine if applicable and a supply fuel
line are what is needed. Adding the vapor canister is a bonus feature. If you don't have a vent or a vented cap one of these ports may
be plumbed high up the the rear fender with a rollover {check} valve in line and a fuel filter on the end to prevent contamination. I used
a small orifice from a gas furnace at the filter end of about 1/16" for my under seat fuel tank. Plug the other vent after determining which
is the best one to use. Here is a check valve with some others shown in the recommendations. Hope this helps.

Got it. I think I just noticed in better lighting what looks like a vapor canister attached to the vent tube that is currently routed high up in the rear fender.

    1. See pictures below, is that what that is circled in red? If so, I imagine I should leave that long vent hose and vapor canister as is and only cap the other short tube coming out of the tank next to it that was leaking gas when overfilled/when gas is sloshing around and call it a day?

    2. Also, the picture of the cap I included below just looks to be a standard gas cap without the vent right? Looks like it based on the vented caps I’ve found searching around online but just want to confirm.

    3. If that is indeed a vapor canister setup with a vent coming off it, would you recommend that I still cap the short tube leaking gas AND get a vented gas cap anyway? Or would I be better off just capping both tubes and getting a vented gas cap?

It looks like all you need to do is cap the open tube and put a good hose clamp on the existing line .
Keep the sealed gas cap as you have the vent tube and check valve. You may want to replace
the check valve shown in my earlier post to have a trouble free system. An ongoing post from
    an earlier type system.

That is not a vapor canister, vapor canisters are much larger like radiator overflow bottles in size. That is just a vent check valve or filter.

Your gasket on the gas cap gas seen better days.

Just cap them both at the tank and get a new vented cap. $20 at your friendly local auto parts store and done.

Not a vapor canister but a vent line and a check valve are all that is needed with a non-vented cap.

I love the simplicity of this assuming it will run just fine with this setup as you mention. Appreciate the feedback. Picked up some caps and a new vented gas cap so I’ll be giving it a shot here next warm day.
