Timing has been set at 12 degrees forever, but now I'm reading it at 6 degrees and that's with the dist. as far to the left as she goes, which used to be 12 degrees! HEI also.

Is the advance/retard mechanism working? Is there a vacuum connection that needs to be checked? (Does the timing change with rpm and/or load?)

But I don't know doodly about HEI, except I don't trust electronic stuff.

I've replaced the coil, cap, ICM, and vac. adv.
It does make a pop outta the exhaust while idling when it's first started up.

You don't say, but I am assuming this is a V6 engine. You did say you replaced the cap. Check to make sure your spark plug wires are in the correct firing order.

I had a brother-in-law who installed a new cap and spark plug wires on his V6 and had two on the wrong terminals. He ran it that way long enough to burn off part of the top of a piston, so they will still run when wired wrong, albeit not so well.

Many people here have several Jeep vehicles with various engines.

Yes I did, but the original post doesn't say much about what it is, other than the clue about HEI. The signature doesn't mean a thing because I have no idea whether that is the Jeep you are asking about.

It is fine with me if you don't appreciate my attempt to help. You won't have to worry about that going forward.

Getting back to the original problem, no one can tell you a magic answer.

Verify all your wiring. If it looks good then...

Pull off the timing chain cover, distributor, water pump, and look at the timing chain. They do wear out. They also have tensionors which wear out and break. Maybe the distributor gear is broken.

Or take the valve cover off and check the distributor position at TDC. It is going to take some work to resolve this.

That kind of assumes the correct answer was in the question. It's a lot of work when other basics haven't been verified.

We have yet to hear from the OP if the advance/retard function is operating, for instance. Or, maybe the fault is in the timing light or meter being used, or how it is being used..

The "ole dimentia ridden s.o.b." (his words not mine) may have clamped the timing light lead onto the wrong spark plug wire. Who knows? He hasn't really responded to anyone's suggestions with anything worthwhile, and hasn't provided much in the way of useful information.

OP is wanting a yes or no answer. So, yes.

If I’m wrong, you’ll find out upon disassembly as you find out what really happened.

We’re not being jerks; it’s just what we’d do if we had this issue on our own rig. We’d start diagnosing it. There are only so many things we can suggest from here, and it sounds like you’re not willing or able to give any of them a try until we just give you the answer you want to hear. Insulting our member base isn’t going to help matters.
