‘56 CJ5, Carter YF carb, electric fuel pump set at 2.5 lbs. It runs great and has no flat spot.
Problem is while driving I smell raw gas. No fuel line or carb leaks. Plugs look sooty around the ring but the electrode looks tan.
I get some blue smoke when hitting the gas.
I’m running the down draft tube off the side valve cover.
    Any ideas?

Is it coming from the gas cap?

    filter.JPG

I'll toss this in here. I have run this filter on every carb I have had since 2001. This would include a Carter 1 barrel (1973 CJ5 258), a Weber, Motorcraft 2 barrel, and a Rochester 2 barrel (on my 225 now). I have not had any fuel pressure issues/too much fuel pushing past the float. It's the standard filter for a 1988 Jeep YJ 258.

In all seriousness, open jeeps do tend to draw in exhaust fumes and dust behind the w/s. Perhaps the reason for venting windshields.

I'm happier with it flat on the hood and catching bugs in my teeth.

And there is the plus to the extra protein. Eating on the road. Fast food.

Could be you are smelling the discharge from the draft tube.

Yes and if the exhaust is routed out the back middle and not the corner or side you will be getting fumigated aswell

If it's gas you're smelling, not exhaust, then the gas cap per post Glen in post #2 makes the most sense.

I would replaced that draft tube with a PCV system, because I sometimes ford streams with my Jeeps which I often use for getting to places I like to fish for trout.
