I have a cj5 73 with a 304. I put the engine in and it tilts to far to the back. I put on new motor mounts and the mounts that mount to the frame. I had new side panel on the outside of the frame welded on and they covered the holes where the metal motor mounts go, so I drilled out the holes from the inside out. I was looking around for a bigger rubber mount on the transmission should help the tilt. Would that work. Thanks

Do you have the right parts for the mounts? The brackets and towers are different for '76 and later, and for the Wagoneer instad of the CJ.

    Where is the crossmember?

    Tilted engine:
    Engine mount wrong.
    Engine towers are wrong.
    Rear crossmember wrong.
    Rear mount wrong.

    Some tilt is normal.

If you feel it's too low, you can shim the transmission mount.

My ‘72 with a 304 had one-inch spacers above the crossmember that lowered the transmission end. The angle of that didn’t seem too steep. I can’t look at it any more as it’s in pieces, stacked up to go to the scrap dealer. (Scrap iron is $190 per ton! Time to sell all that junk.)

When the engine mounts went in the project, I seem to recall a four degree tilt. I used my iPhone on the frame rail, then on a flat spot on the engine.

Just match the angles of the rear pinion shaft and the output of the transfer case and it should be OK.

My 75 also has a decent amount of lean rearward. If your using the correct motor and crossmember mounts, I'd install and check your fluids and move on. If you bring the transfer case tailshaft up it's going to affect the rear driveshaft angle. Usually a dramatic tilt is from spacers being added to lower the tail shaft to compensate for lift.
