i broke my clutch fork, do i need to remove trans?

    i broke the end where the cable hooks to, is removing the transmission the only way to replace it? the jeep is a 56 with a 198.

    as far as i know you either have to remove the tranny or the engine to replace the fork.

    i would vote for the tranny ;)

    When I replaced my clutch I realized I hadn't put the fork on the throwout bearing _AFTER_ I had put the bellhousing/transmission/t-case (got in a hurry i guess) back on. I was able to remove the rubber gromet on the side of the bellhousing and work it in there properly without removing anything, though.

    worked for me, should work for you i'd assume.

    eh, I just noticed you said w/ a 198. Mine's a dauntless and I would imagine that my bellhousing is a lot larger and has a lot more room to work with inside of it :-\ you could always give it a quick try, though.

    yes you must remove the tranmission to change this.

    i would think that it would be impossible for the v6 also. isn't it designed to keep the fork in place when assembled? not saying you did anything wrong, but it must have been very difficult to get it in there.

    IF the fork has all the clips and springs - YES you must pull the tranny (preferable) to swap forks... and YES - I know this the hard way by putting the 'WRONG %^()@&&' fork in the first time once (got the 225 and 231's mixed up).

    As long as it's out might as well do the job. I just bought the kit and the fork was included from Walck's. At least change the bearing. No #$%@ alignment tool though.

    I'm not familiar with the v-6 configuration very much, but
    can't you take the bottom cover off and work through there?

    I thought that it was sort of split on the bottom and one could remove the lower half of that plate. Perhaps it is too far aft....


    Altermatively you could cut a hole with a sawzall in the bell housing and work through that.

    Afterwards, you could drill and tap some screws in the bottom of the B/H, fabricate a cover, and seal it with caulk.

    Might be a whole lot more fun than ripping the engine / transmission assembly apart.

    Who knows? that patch plate might come in handy some time if some mud or other stuff gets into the clutch area???

    I did this on a Jeepster. It takes time, patience, and really long screwdrivers help. Get a good light on the situation. Put on some great melodic tunes. There is "just" enough slack to slide the fork off the clips. then removal is easy. The fun part is getting it back in. You have to get onto the bearing first, then go past the clips and drag it back onto the clip. This is where the really long screwdrivers, prybars, etc come in handy. Oh, get that rubber booty thing out of your way.

    I thought the same thing, but such is not the case. If you remove the grommet and look in from the wheelwell, you can see right into the B/H. When I was installing the AA chain clutch linkage, I knocked my clutch fork off the pivot and off the T/O bearing. It was 3 days before Tellico and I thought I was hosed... But, within about 10 minutes, I had it back in just fine.

    The 198... I'm not sure - sorry. But I'd sure try it before pulling the tranny. Whaddya got to lose?
