Dana 25 Vs. Dana 27?

What is the difference between a Dana 25 and a Dana 27 front end? I have a '56 CJ5 and I believe it has a Dana 25. I just bought a set a of axles off a '59 and was told they were 27 front and 44 rear. Are a 25 and 27 interchangable?

Looks like they are interchangable.

 

The axles themselves are. Most parts except the ring and pinion / carrier assembly are as well I think.

 

the 27 should have a larger diameter axle shaft vs. 25. Also some 27's have the 8 bolt carrier as well. (must be early ones).

 

Some early 27's definetly had 8 ring gear bolts. But in my experiences, the axle shaft diameters is the same between a 25 or a 27.
