Anybody find decent aftermarket replacement sunvisors for their CJ? I've still got the originals and the vinyl is in decent condition but the friction mechanism is waaaaay too tight.

I originally gave it a couple of shots of WD40 where the mounting brackets fit into the visor, but that wasn't much help. I decided to just go ahead and replace them, so I went by Turners and picked a pair up for $58.00. Little bit different design than the original and you adjust the width by pulling the mounting brackets out to the required length. Only problem there is, you have to pull them way out to use the original mounting holes and then they flip-flop all over the place. I believe this is pretty much the standard replacement set you see in the catalogs...made in China in assorted colors.......but aggravating to say the least.

Well, those are going back to Turners .Then I started working on the originals. You can remove the two mounting brackets , they slide into a tube that runs throught the length of the visor. Thoroughly cleaned the mating surfaces and thought I had it solved, but still to tight even with a liberal dose of silicone spray to the surfaces.

Anybody got and suggestions or a pair they want to sell ?

I was given a set that was pretty tight as well....I put them in the vice and kept spraying "liberal" amounts of silicone....then lithium grease in the ends. One freed up pretty nice, the other is still kinda tight.

Four wheel drive hardware has them for 30-40 I think. Go to their website: 4wd.com.

Guys, thanks for the responses. Just about all the replacement sunvisors you see on EBay and from the .coms ARE the 'close but no cegar' that flip-flop all over the place. You pull up to a stoplight, push the visor up to see the light...get the green, let out the clutch and the visor falls down.....and don't even try to put them up underway with the top off..the wind pushes them right back down.

I know it seems like a little thing, but boy is it aggravating. I believe Omix-Ada is the importer of this replacement and whomever come up with this design should be shot. I bet they never even rode around in a CJ , much less with the top down !!

What I'm actually looking for is another manufacturer with a different design or a pair of originals someone is willing to part with. Color is unimportant........Thanks..

Yes I do. Get out your .22 rifle cleaning kit, use the brush & a section of rod, lube the rod w/oil or WD 40 & REEEEEM it out:shock: (the tube, that is). This will remove the corrosion inside the tube. Then take some untra fine sandpaper or emory cloth & clean the shaft. VIOLA!!! Smooth working parts. Be careful not to get to aggressive or the visors will always just flop. Clean & test, clean & test...you get the picture.
