Is there a way to find out the original paint color on a 74 CJ5 if you do not have the plate on the firewall? I have the Vin on the dash but thats it.

To the best of my knowledge, the fire wall plate "had" the trim codes. Even the 17 digit VIN's of autos produced since 1980 dont contain any trim identifiers. If it has had a "complete" repaint, you could pop off the bolted on floor panels around the shifters or pull the radiator & remove the grill for hidden, but factory painted, surfaces. Unless it had a frame off restoration, the underside of the floor pans will provide some clues as to the original color, and then a body/paint shop will have reference materials that should nail down the color exactly.

Hey JD7...thanks for the chart...mine is code 492 (confirmed from the firewall plate)...however, I cant read the name of the color(small screen & low resolution...I'm not a computer nerd). Would you be so kind as to respond with the color name? Muchas grass-e-***.

Bye the bye...do you have a link to the other info contained therein?

I had that color; Jet Set Blue Metallic on my last 74. It is a beautiful color when it is applied I strongly suggest it.
