Hoping someone can help me with this. My 75 drivers side rear parking light is pretty much standard..red reflector w/light set into an indentation in the rear quarterpanel.

The passenger side is a circular reflector w/light and has no indentation in the quarterpanel. Also the hole that the light fits into is rather rough..not symetrical....

Looking at other similar intermediate CJ5, they seem to have the standard right rear light that I believe fits into an indentation in the rear quarterpanel. As you can see there is no indentation in mine. Anybody else seen this and is it common or the exception ? Thanks !

Also, as you can see there are numerous bolt holes in this area. I believe they might have been used for the side-mounted spare tire. Is this correct ?

the marker light arrangement is correct; the only change is the side mount carrier has been removed in favor of the swing away unit. The lamp would have been installed inside the middle of the tire mount.
PO made the current hole, at least that's the way I see it.

Yeah, my 74 is just the same. The bolts on the right side are for the original side mounted spare tire carrier. I'm not sure what the original right side light/reflector looked like, mine is a small oval one from the running lights of a semi-trailer. I always assumed it was smaller and was meant to shine through the center hole of the spare tire's wheel but I don't know.

Yep, Jim's got it. On '72-75 CJs with a side mounted spare, that round reflector on the passenger side was originally mounted in the center of the side-mounted spare tire bracket. All these Jeeps with a tailgate came with a side-mounted spare. There was originally a small hole in the fender for the wire harness to pass through, and that's been enlarged to accomodate the round reflector. The rest of the holes are from the tire carrier mounting. Putting the reflector in this location was standard procedure when mounting a swing-away tire carrier (at least at the dealership where I worked).

    Here's my '75 CJ-6, about a year old:

Jeeps from these years with solid back panels (and rear mounted spares) came with rectangular markers on both sides, and an indent in both fenders.

Both prior posts are 100% correct. The reflector/lamp mounts in the side carrier spare tire bracket & illuminates through the center hole in the wheel when the lights are turned on. While sitting still, the reflector does its thing. As you can tell by my user name, I am going back to all original configuration with mine, If you would like to get rid of the round lamp, I would be happy to swap you for a rectangular unit that would match what you have on the left side. Please PM me if interested.

Also noted we are not that far away, I am north of Gainesville & south of Cleveland. I had an idea for a weekend cook out & get together a week or so ago (search my posts). We do have a few brethern in N. GA, TN & Western N.C. Still sounds like a good idea to me. By the by, nice looking rig!!!

man....this site is simply amazing ! I knew I could find the answer here....and no guessing, just facts. And I thought I was obsessed with this stuff !!

Original CJ5........thanks for the offer. I think I'll keep the current arrangement. AFAIK this was the original set-up. I bought the jeep in 1981 from the original owner, a Cobb County fireman. I find it interesting that the factory used two right quarterpanels, one with the indentation, the other without; depending on the order. I'll check your other posts for the get-together. Leaves should be changing soon..might have to plan a roadtrip !!

So am I to assume that the rear swingout tire carrier/with two jerry-can holders was factory..or is that a dealer installed option? Would my firewall plate indicate this configuration ?

Lastly, can someone post or point me in the right direction to see a picture of the side-mounted spare tire. I'd kinda like to see what that looked like.....

Thanks again for everyones responses..these CJ's are a blast !!

Your carrier could have been installed by the dealer or the PO. Made by Kayline. Not much info about the configuration on the firewall: engine, transmission, springs (HD or std), color and trim (seat color and type) is all that's there.

BTW, thinking about this some more, I recall that the original hole in the fender had a grommet in it, and when you removed the grommet it was large enough for the center of the clearance light. On my CJ-6, only the two smaller holes that secure the light were needed. You can see that the placement isn't ideal - the fender flares overlap the edge of the light a little.

The light actually mounts to the spare tire bracket. The hole with the grommet is where the wire for the lamp comes through the panel.

I was searching on ebay the other day for not anything in particular and ran across one of these lights for bid. I didn't need it so I didn't pay much attention to it. So I don't know how long or how much or who had it. Should still be up for a couple days I think. Cam

Hmmmm, very strange. I have a '74 that has the same parking light on both sides, see

    http://members.shaw.ca/karl.norrena

But my Jeep never had a side mount tire carrier. I dont have a tailgate either. Do you? I ask because I have the same cutout on both sides and dont recall an indentation for the parking lights on either side. Did Jeep use different rear quarters on the with and without tailgate cj5s?

Yes, on the right rear. I think you'll find that your clearnace lights are set in to the fenders on both sides.

You know I thought it funny back in the early 80's, I need to repair/replace the Kayline spare tire mount due to a weld break. That's pretty much weight on the mount bouncing around back there. I inquired at Turners about getting it fixed/replaced. Gene comes around the corner with a brand new one !

Now I see why. Kayline designed their rear carrier to accept the factory mount. Very cool !! Seeing the picture indicates that mine is the original.

The models without tailgates had a taller spare tire bracket mounted on the rear body panel, thus the standard rectangular side marker & the indent in the panel. I have one of those brackets that I was going to put on E-bay.If anyone is interested, please PM me. It has no reflector, however.
