    Hey guys,

Have an issue or question for ya.

I need some ammo to use on the wife in order for her to "let me" buy a full cage for High5. I have told her that it would be safer on and off road, but that didn't work. Does she not care for my safety:?

I need some pictures of rolled CJ 5's and advice of how to convince her of the need.

    Thanks guys,

    High5:beer:

let her sit in the pass seat
run a tape measure from the top of the roll bar to the top of the dash, just under the w/shield frame
any of her upper body above the tape ? (head/shoulders)
if so, tell her she would most likely not survive a roll-over
problem solved (or a new one created)

That is a good one. I think I will take her out to the Jeep immediately. What aggrevates me the most is that when my dad and I built the Jeep, he pulled the front of the cage out to ease in entry. Now I wish I had it back.

Thanks and keep the ideas comin' She is subborn:)

My Jeep....you can see how the rollbar saved a lot of body damage (windshield frame and who knows what else) not to mention we all walked away without a scratch. This was a 1 MPH rollover to. Had it not been for the rollbar it would have went all the way over on our heads

Boyink has some pics of Dutch rolled over. The cage definately saved him. I'm sure he'll chime in...

    1.25 turns.

Pretty typical 6-point cage with front hoop and spreaders added on to a fenderwell roll bar. Not tied to frame - just sandwich plated to the body.

Tweaked the w/s frame a bit, not enough to break the glass. No serious injuries. We flipped the Jeep back over (OK, my friends did while I sat on a rock and waited for the shakes to stop.... ), re-seated two tires, aired them up, topped off the oil, fired her up and drove her back to camp.

IMHO there's simply no argument over whether or not to have a rollcage - if you're going to take the Jeep offroad you just have to have it. Now the scale/budget of goes in might be up for discussion....

Show her this Sami. It did a back flip off a wall onto a rock slab. No front hoop. Luckily there was a hoop attached to the B-pillar and the Sami was light enough that the B-pillar held and did not crush their skulls in. The B-pillar and the hoop were severely damaged though.

I'm a newly wedd and I respect her opinion about how we spend money. I expect the same from her. Spud, I sure hope you are just giving me a hard time about "control". I can take a little ribbingR)

I have had two jobs in the past and have no desire working 7 days a week any more. I liked the money, but I never had time to spend any of it or do anything else.

Thanks for the help and keep the pics coming,

Agreeing on where the $$ goes is a good thing - I hope I didn't imply that with my post. I'm hoping the real discussion between you and your wife is *really* how much you should spend on a cage, not whether you need one or not...;) There are the occaisonal used cages that come and go here on the board...I sold the one from that rollover for $125, IIRC.

FWIW - a system that worked well when I had a "Real Job" with a consistent income was a "Jeep fund" -- a predetermined amount of $$ from every check went into the fund. I think in my case it was based on x number hours of OT when I had a job where I chould choose if and how much OT I worked, but your job situation might be different.

Then the deal was, if the $$ was in the Jeep Fund, it was mine to spend - no argument, no explaination needed (tho I'd usually let her know if I was about to drain it on something big). If the $$ wasn't there, then I either waited or went a different direction.

This was nice in that it prevented having to argue a rollcage against groceries, or the mortgage.

Now that I'm self-employed, to buy/build SSDutch I built the fund up by parting out Dutch, selling off Jeep toys, and some other stuff I didn't need. The fund is way low at the moment...and I'm starting to hurt for ways to build it up again...

    High5-

I will give you the cage I just took out of my JEEP. I know it's a ways away from you, but it's yours if you want it.

That sounds like a good idea, having a specific Jeep fund. I had a cage in mind off of a different board, and this thing was strout. Had the front hoop tied into the rear with two outside bars and then two inside one's as well. Plus there was a bar behind the front seats with a Hi lift on it. It also had the rear down bars like on the wranglers. Damn, I hope this guys still has it.

What have you guys paid to have one made???

I paid $800 for this, not including the belts which were another $125 off eBay.

The Jeep fund is a dual-ledger system, common in accounting. My Dad taught me that method when I was 17, and it served me well. It's a little more expensive than a single-ledger system, since you need an account for both funds - bill paying and spending money, in my case. Paying the extra account fees is usually a good tradeoff for how easy it is to put into practice though.

I now use a "Pay yourself first" method, where I front-load savings and investment and let the remaining money control what I spend. Fortunately I am reflexively frugal now, so I can easily live below my means - that's much harder when you're starting out.

The other way to do it is have one actual account at the bank, but split them in the record keeping at home. Those pesky "minimum balance" requirements can get in the way sometimes...;)

Like other guys here, I also have a "Jeep Fund". Some of it comes from buying/selling parts, some from side jobs. Very little comes from the household. I also get a percentage from our Tax refunds. Like many others I found before the fund was set up that I rarely had money for the Jeep. Now it fluctuates but usually have something in there. I've also used the Jeep Fund for camping or vacation expenses, emergencies, etc over the years. Comes in real handy. I have a savings account set up for it that is separate from all the other accounts. I have it set up so I have to go in and withdraw, no atm card, no check book. Reason is it helps eliminate impulse buying that can drain the account unnecesarily. I keep a certain ammount of cash folded out of sight in my wallet separate from other moneys for those "emergency buys" that are too good a deal to pass up. Even when I don't have enough cash on me to purchase something on the spot usually a cash deposit and receipt is enough to get the person to hold it. Cash and a guaranteed buyer talk! Nickmil.

These are all great idea's, however, let's get back on to topic. We have the money, it's just getting her to let me (Yes, I said let me) spend some.

    More roll over pics please.

Uh, how many pics is it going to take? That Sammy one alone is pretty powerful.

There's always Google. And more Google.

Another thought - if there's a way, have her pick up a w/s frame that doesn't have the glass mounted in it.
