I just inherited a 73 that's been sitting in a garage for the past 10 years. The brakes are in terrible shape. I started out by replacing the master cylinder and now the pedal is really hard. After looking through a few repair manuals, I realized fixing the front drums is beyond my "comfort zone", pulling the hubs and such.. I'm going to have the dealership fix them. (Read $$$) Now the real test is going to be to fix the rear drums. Can anyone point me in the right direction to instructions or manual for pulling the drums off the rear? It looks to me like I need a special tool to remove them. Suggestions? If anyone feels like spending an afternoon, c'mon over.

73 will have 1 piece flanged axles
    for the rears:
    simply remove the wheel
lubricate around the wheel stud hole openings
smack with deadblow hammer in the center flange area of the drum
should pop right off, no puller needed
adjusters for brake shoes might have to be backed off only if the linings are extremly worn; you can't see this condition; if the drums loosen up and try to come off but won't, then loosen the adjusters
the fronts should come off the same way
all of your brakes are 11" and are very easy to service
if you don't have a service manual for your Jeep, consider buying one

Not sure if you are familiar with the Haynes Manual, but I have one for almost every car I've owned. Step by step instructions for just about any repair. They are available at most auto parts stores.

Uh, with all due respect the reprint of the Factory Service Manual is much better when it comes to Jeeps. Haynes and Chiltons tend to lump 30 years of Jeep production into one book, where the FSM is much more year-specific.

You can get a FSM reprint at http://www.thejeep.com for ~$40, IIRC, and it's the best $$ you'll spend on the Jeep.
