Gentlemen - I'd appreciate your help valuing a Jeep that I'm looking at purchasing. Its a '73 CJ5 with a 304v8 3 speed, engine is pristine (recent rebuild), new starter/alternator/water pump/radiator/fan shroud, very good body, re-paint (color change) that is starting to chip in a few places, very little if any rust, good interior (original back seat), less than 75k miles (one owner), all guages/switches/knobs/turn signals work, Warn winch, good rubber on alumimum aftermarket rims. No ps/pb.

Needs brakes, carburator leaks, throwout bearing is staring to make noise.

If I purchase, I promise that I will post pics.

    Thanks in advance,

    McQ

Rust, dent, smash, scratch free '73 Jeeps with very solid original tubs go for a bit more here in the salt belt of Minnesota. I bet you would get every bit of $3500 for this Jeep up here -- especially with a rebuild -- maybe a bit more. But I'd check the build sheet on the motor, and check the reputation of the mechanic.

I'd be more than a little suspicious of a rebuild at 75K miles.

    What's your location?

Texas. V8 emblems on the side are in good shape. I was surprised by the need for a rebuild as well. Motor looks good now. Engine rebuild was a professional job. Owner has receipts to document all work.

Needs new top. Stock dash replaced with aluminum - looks like good work.

    Thanks again.

I bought a brand-new CJ-5 in 1973 for $4400, fully equipped (PS, PB, HD everything), roll bar, hubs and a soft top - just for comparison. Today, I'd guess that the Jeep you are asking about would be worth between $2000 and $4000... an original creampuff, unmodified, with original paint might fetch $5000 or so, maybe a little more.

It seems like there are quite a few Jeeps in Texas, and the weather is dry, so the prices should be lower than say, the west coast.

Welcome. What part of Texas are you in? That will affect how much you will have to pay. Sounds silly but true.

Adding a couple of pics for us would be a big help. What is the guy asking for it? Is it in your zone of comfort? Add in the cost of the top, etc and make him an offer. As long as you are happy with the purchase price, nothing else really matters... :)

I gave 3 for my '73 CJ5 with a 304v8 3 speed, rebuilt motor, after market rims, soft-top, bikini top and half doors. I'm in the Pacific Northwest.
