What tools do i need to change out the inner oil seals for a dana 44 open knuckle axle? I know i have to pull the chunk and shafts out, and pry off the seals, but somehow i have to make a tool to seat the new oil seals. Looks like i have to make a ramrod of some sorts to go through the housing. is there an easier way to do this? Also told the wife, that since i have to go in the front end, i might as well put a locker in while i am there  :) :)

I would use a regular seal driver and run a rod of some sort through the opposite axle tube to drive it in. This would require two people, but I think it's the only way.

What kind of locker are you going with?

just going to get a lockrite for it. best bang for the buck for me.

This axle soooo needs seals. I cleaned up the oil the floor before i went to north carolina, when i got back it was streaming down my garage floor. :( I wodner if there is anymore oil left in it ;)

Couldn't you use a piece of pipe that was long enough and weld a plate on the end thats just the right size for the seal? I had to do this on mine, but I forget how I did it exactly.

2 possibilites if it is a Jeep axle.
    2-1/4" OD 1974-1979
    2-5/8" OD 1977 and later
    note the overlap in years

I use two big sockets and a piece of threaded rod w/ a pair of nuts and washers. Just turn the nuts to press outward from the center.
