I am trying to install a new Solex carburetor on my 64 CJ5. I have a vacuum advance coming from the distributor and there is no port in the Solex. One of the jeep parts dealers just told me that I have the wrong distributor in the jeep and that it shouldn't have the vacuum advance? He said I should install the Solex and leave the vacuum advance line disconnected. Can anyone confirm this?

    Help?

can you find a tag or number on yours ?
like : IAD 4041 or something simlilar
if we can get a number we can try and ID the original application for your dist.
I believe it is not original to your Jeep; that doesn't mean it's bad, just not your application, even though the Jeep runs fine.
Distibutors can be moved around just like other Jeep parts.

Jim, the distributor is a Prestolite IAT-4405 11C. Thanks for your assistance.

only listing I can find for an early Autolite/Prestolite F4 with vac advance comes from the FC 150 series of Jeep trucks, circa 1959, 1960 etc.
there may be a later emissions model as well, 69 70 71.
I can't run down the number you furnished
wonder if it's from a Jeep/Willys industrial engine, like a welder, compressor, etc.
here's a couple pics of the FC 150 distributor

Thanks Jim. Looks like I don't have the stock distributor. Any recommendation on whether I should buy a new distributor or an original distributor? I spoke with a dealer yesterday and he mentioned that they got a "bad batch" of the repro distributors that had to be returned to the manufacturer.

Based on my experience with the repro distributors I say try to find an original one. I've found that the bushings don't last long even if they're oiled and the upper shaft gets sloppy real quick.

I would just run it with the vac advance plugged off.
if performance is affected, maybe look for a good used original dist until then.
nothing to fret about in my opinion

And keep your eye out for an original too. Even if the bushings are worn, they are a typical hardware store item and easy to replace. You may also consider getting a model that the Pertronix will work with as well. (IAD-4008 and the IAY series....) See here for the Pertronix list.

I installed the Solex this past weekend and left the vacuum advance detached. Seems to run fine! It certainly idles better and starts easier. I am still working on wiring the choke cable to the carb, but no big deal. For now, I'll leave the "old" distributor in as long as she continues to run nicely....now onto the brakes and transmission...Thanks for all your help.
