    two words boys....tranny jack
Either one that works with your floor jack or a true tranny jack. My cj2a absolutely whipped my a$$ a couple of years ago doing it this way, until I got the attachment to go on my floor jack. Worth a look.

Nah, the ground will stop it!
Well, on second thought, yes. He should let it droop a couple inches, and then stop it from dropping further by use of a jackstand, wood blocks etc. letting it drop slightly will make it easier to line things back up going back together. Dont let it go too far though. IIRC, the 4cyl has motor mounts all the way up front which will make it want to drop in the rear with all of the engine weight.

That's what I thought, what's gonna hold up the rear of the engine? Makes sense that it's gotta be propped up somehow.

Now, next question, is it best to remove the crossmember under the tranny too? Or is it helpful for that to stay there?

I always unbolted the rear crossmember and dropped the tranny a bit until the engine oil pan came in contact with a 2x4 on top of a jack stand. Not too much tilt to the engine, but a little. It really helps in getting that tranny input shaft in & out if there is say a 5* downslope to it. Then I support the tranny and transfer case on the floor jack and unbolt the crossmember from the rubber mount and remove it.

NEVER, EVER let the tranny hang by only the input shaft! You WILL bend it, and this usually shows up with a slight vibration and the front bearing/seal going south in a few hundred miles....

Thanks all, great information to file away! Guess it's obvious I haven't done this yet. I just pulled the motor, tranny and t/c all together after I had the tub off, just yanked it all straight up. And that's how they still are, sitting in the corner just waiting....

Maybe if I do it all right the first time, I won't have to pull it out later on. But, might get another Jeep someday too...

 I wonder... The crossmember bolts broke on the passenger side at the dirt track one night this summer. Didn't notice it for a few days. The tranny has leaked like no tomorrow since. I wonder if I bent that shaft

It cannot really bend the shaft, unless the bellhousing is loose from the engine, or the tranny loose from the bell.

Bearing retainer was rtv'd, no gasket...break in seal at bottom where it was apparently not clean enough to stick (of course). I used brakleen and rtv again. Been through hard service at Tellico and still doesn't leak 8)
