I removed the gas tank from my 66 Tux because of a minor leak and found some rotten carpet underneath. Was this original and if not, what was there instead? Peace!

If you mean regular carpet, that wouldn't be stock. When we pulled the tanks out of our 66 CJ6 Tux, there was (rotton) fiber mat under there, kind of like horsehair seat padding. Hard to say if it was OEM stuff, or added. We replaced the rusted tanks with new ones - modified M38 tanks, that are galvanized, and much thicker than the stock tanks (It was a real PIA to clean and rivet/solder the new filler necks in, because of the galv. plating). I used strips of Sorbothane, a soft rubber vibration-damping material, between the new tanks and floor.
