I know this has been covered a thousand times,, and I have read a lot of the articles. I went to look at some jeep parts, it was a 79 cj5. I bought the power steering pump and saginaw unit. The guy said heck just take the whole dana 30 and all of the steering componets you want.He has the shaft that goes into the power steering unit, but that is all. He said take the rest off the other jeep. It is a 79 also but it has a manual set up with everything including the complete wheel and all the shafts. Question is what all do I need. Would it just be easier to just use the new dana 30 instead of my 27? I know I will have to change out the gears but I wanted to go a little higher than the 4.88 any how. Thanks

Get as much as he'll give you - you can sell what you don't use!!!

Seriously, for just the PS conversion - get everything from the bottom of the column to the knuckles on the axles. That includes the steering shaft, the PS box, the PS box mount, and the tie rods. That's the minimum you'll need to convert your '71.

As a side note - I think you'll have to get a longer steering shaft b/c the later Jeep steering columns were on a different angle, and came through the firewall at a different location. I think this makes the shaft too short to just slap right onto an early CJ with the skinny column.

Swapping a D30 in works well, but you may need some steel shims between the perch and the springs to maintain caster angle/driveability.
The D30 is about 1.5" wider each side, than your D27... but the springs line up correctly.

I love my Dana 30, especially since it doesn't leak on the driveway anymore.;) It was easy to install, even if I did have to regear it. I'd think very hard about swapping it in, especially since your getting it free.

The power saginaw boxes also have a different shaft diameter than the manual ones. Learned that one the hard way...

Yea, that is the things I need to know! The jeep was a running when he parked it. He has the 304 for sale for a couple of hundred. He is at the beach in Nags Head and the body just rusted off. He had to go to a glass tub on his 79 because he is on the water.
